Default 3SGTE with custom modded sump...how much oil will I need?

    Hi there,

I have recently acquired a 3SGTE that has has a few parts of it already modded to suit a RWD conversion, in particular the sump. I believe it is a Gen2 3SGTE. The sump has been shortened and welded with a rectangular box at the base with some angled sections on the side and a baffle plate.

Is there some kinda of fomula to determine how much oil I will need? I've thought of trying to find the original capacity of the standard sump and comparing that the the capacity of my modded sump, however at what level is a standard sump full? I don't imagine it is when the sump is full to the top?

I have very limited knowledge of oil capacities and flow requirements for engines. Could anyone please help?

    Cheers,

    Joel

I heard a lot of stories of 3sgte's not hanging together due to oil starvation issues, especially in RWD as oil can get stuck in the head and have troubles draining back.

So I made my sump 6.5ltrs and its proven itself now, held together for around 3 years now with heaps of track days. The standard sump held around 5ltrs and I figured if worst case scenario it could hold 1ltr in the head before draining back, so by going a bit over 6ltrs I could ensure there was always at least 5 in the sump.

To find out where the standard sump full mark use the dip stick to get an idea of what level is full.

I think from memory mine is around 10 - 20mm below the lip of the sump.

A simple rule of thumb is - the more oil, the better! Then just baffle accordingly (I spotted a thread about 1uz wet sumps before, probably some tips in there on designs).

From there, use the standard oil level (you'll have to measure capacity of a stock sump, and guesstimate height/level based on the dipstick to ensure you don't starve the pickup or introduce crankshaft aeration issues.

as Joel said, use standard dipstick and measure how much goes in.

If the modified pump holds the same amount of oil as a stock one then dipstick measurement will be the same. However if it holds less oil then you aren't going to have the same amount oil of when you read the level off the dipstick which means you'll probably want to remark it with a scribed line or centre punch etc.
A good place to start would be to check where th oil level is on the dipstick and drain it to see how much is in there. If it's less than the recommended amount you'll need to put more in

if it's turbo you don't want to over fill it tho as the oil won't be able to drain from the turbo and it'll possibly force it's way past the seals

My 3SGE sump takes 6L. Don't know how the well the baffling works yet.
