well looks like im getting a 2jzge pending running video![]()
well, if it was me with a non turbo 2jz, id give it a shot.. but thats only cause your not putting positive pressure into the engine so you wont lean out as such if you didnt have enough fuel supplied. but yeah definitely be fixing it asap
well looks like im getting a 2jzge pending running video![]()
Hey I am thinking of either a 1jzgte or 2jzge into my MX83.
I would do 100% of the work myself, fab, wiring etc.
But why are people throwing around these 3 - 4k figures?
The way I see it, a JZX90 1jzgte for example can get a frontcut for $1700.
I can swap over left/right mounts.. Can use the hydro fan..
Apart from a few bits of pipe, oil and a fuel pump how does the price get up to 4k?
I figure 2k max.
?
Am I kidding myself?
Mind you i've done plenty of engine conversions, more than I can count on my digits.. I realise some times they blow out.. But how does something this simple blow out so much?
you may want to consider upgrading the fuel pump for the 1j, it maybe right if its on stock boost and still a healthy pump.. walbro $300ish
when you have the motor out you want to really put new oil seals in, front main, rear main, cam cover and cam seals $150-300
while its out, wont hurt to do the timing belt $100+
replace some vacuum lines $40
replace the radiator with a new one $600
new exhaust to suit $500-1000
new engine mount rubbers $100
boost gauge $80
thermostat $40
engine flush, injector flush, radiator flush $60
if you have to freight the half cut these more $$
i dont think you would be able to do it for 2k properly. it wouldnt be as reliable. this time i want to do the cressy properly hence spending a bit more money in the right places to make it reliable so i can get in and just drive it.
2jzge is a good option, it was also what i was going for originally. ive been in a mates jza80 (which are heavier) and that thing pulls very well and will do the biggest number on the speedo with ease. the 1jz is a much revvier option. i went the 2j for the extra toque (about 80 NM) it also makes peak toque and power at lower RPM so you dont have to rev the date out of it to make it move.
but in a lighter car with a manual i think a 1jz would be more fun.
Not entirely sure on the pricing for the GTE Joel, but for someone of decent experience, i.e. you or me types, then it can be done quite cheaply.
My conversion cost about $1700 for the 2JZGE into the MX83. Thats including the W58 (which admittedly i got cheap).
EDIT: FARK, talk about costly. My edits in bold
I think if you need to pay $3-4k to do it properly then you are pissing money down the drain. As above, my entire conversion came in for $1700 including rebuilding or replacing most stuff.Originally Posted by ae71
But then again, there are some mighty idiots out there, a guy paid $6k to get a 2JZGE put into his MA61 over here in SA...

yeah matey, it can be done a lot cheaply. but sooner or later shit needs replacing. lets face it they arnt that new of a motor in most cases, a lot also do cop a flogging from time to time.
im just sick of having to fix something on the corolla once a week. i wanted a newer, reliable, respectable car with a bit of poke. or i would have went a mx73![]()
Yeah granted if i gave the engine a freshen up it will cost more.. But I probably wouldn't really bother at the moment unless I see something obvious. I can knock up a complete exhaust for $300 but probably just leave factory for now also.
So a budget conversion should be under 2k by the sounds of it.
Takai, how do you find the 2jzge goes? I'm so confused about which one to get.. Can get a 2jzge frontcut for $1400 or a 1jzgte frontcut for $1700 maybe $1800.. Leaning towards the 1jzgte.
really depends on what you are doing with the car and what you want out of it.
2jz should have balls at idle, 1jzgte you dont have instant power..
2jzge prob more practical for daily driving, 1jzgte is easy power.
dont forget you could always combine the two and have a 1.5jz![]()
Above post edited to reflect ae71s post.
Joel: the 2JZGE goes quite well, dynoed 8kw less than Gavatrons 1JZGTE, about 15mins apart on the same dyno.
1JZGTE will be easier for aftermarket stuff, and upgrades later. 2JZGE is quick, simple and has 138rwkw. Plus i dont have to worry about Mr Plod, and its a user-certifiable modification, being 3L replacing 3L.

Do yous happen to know the average fuel efficiency of both options?
i always over estimate prices so if its cheaper i dont cut myself short.. i dont buy them sort of regular parts very often.
i get OEM replacement genuine toyota parts direct from japan. i have a small importing/tuning business (why im importing a 2jz myself)
when i got prices for seals from bursons they quoted me about $150 or more for just those ones listed.. paid much less for genuine ones tho
i kinda also wanted a turbo car too hence the GTE, i also decided that the 3L would be better suited to my app.
I think the 2jzge auto used a donut not a slip yoke ? that will add cost to my conversion..
say what? are you talking about where the tailshaft joins to the box?
both my auto box's (mx83 and jzx81) have the thingo with the spline yoke that slides in..

2JZ series autos (predominatnly A341s) have a donut yoke, not a slip yoke. However, it is childs play to swap the yoke from the A340 which you will already have.
My 2JZ gets around 11-12L/100km, around town. Less on the first few tanks of fuel, because i was still having fun. Havnt done any significant highway miles on it yet, need to get a fair way out of Adelaide before it goes to 100km/h.

When you swap over the extension housing do you have any problems with the required speed sensor from the 2J not going back in or thats all ok still?
