    Jason,

New rings arent that expensive, what brand rings did you buy off ebay?
Are you planning on re-using the head gaskit or purchasing a new one?

I got my 3sgte gasket thru those folks (CNSautoparts) - odd they they send you borked rings? maybe the pistons are not correct for the motor?

Yeah I found it odd that only the oil control rings didnt fit. They were physically too thick to sit in the groove. I would have thought the old ones would still work ok though.
So can anybody give me a confident yes that poor oil control rings are the problem? If so speak now and I will go to bursons, then embark on another weekend under the car.

    Cheers, Jason

Also how was your block and head surface prepped, did you check for flatness? Is your rings gapped properly?did you do a compression test before pulling the engine apart?

I would put new oil rings regardless in that way you know its new. I don't know why you woudln't install new oil rings in the first place even though you new the ones you had were wrong.

Your old oil rings are not sealing because honing takes about 5 thou off the bore.

I am thinking that your crankcase might be pressurising. Have you got the PCV system hooked up properly to your new intake manifold, or have you got the rocker cover breathing to atmosphere so your crankcase doesn't pressurise.
With your old DGAV weber setup. There are a few different DGAV webers around. The 1600 kent motors ran a smaller version with a 24 mm primary choke and 26mm secondary choke. The 2litre engines ran a 26mm primary choke and 27mm secondary choke so they flowed better. Some ran a 4.5 auxillary venturi on the secondary barrel while others had 3.5 aux venturi on both barrels.
If the DGAV isn't big enough then try a 34ADM that came off a six cylinder falcon. It has 27 and 29mm chokes and you should be able to buy one for about $30. It has the same bolt pattern as the DGAV on the base but you will need a different air cleaner.

The oil rings were not in spec. Max end gap is 0.92 mm. Standard is 0.2 - 0.62 mm. The gap in mine was about 1mm. So I decided to go with repco for new rings as the ebay lot didnt fit. New rings arrived today and they also dont fit. Oil ring thickness is 4mm for both sets I have bought. The old ones seem to be 2.5 mm. The guys at repco think the motor may be JDM. Does anybody know if there is a difference from JDM to ADM pistons? Namely the oil ring thickness. Or are these not stock pistons?

I have done a little reading and the motor is JDM because it has yamaha printed on the head. I am lead to believe this means it has higher compression so probably different pistons aswell.

    awsome

have you tried calling ACL directley?? giving them the specs for your ring size?? they might be able to match things up..

Iv left a piston, the old rings and the new ones all with repco and they are trying to hunt some down. If they cant find them il have to start ringing around.

    pardon the pun

This seems like a good idea. Although I am hoping they can source the jap rings and that they will be cheaper than getting adm pistons and then getting them pressed onto my conrods. But that is a good plan b neal, thanks.

I found this when doing some research on rings.
    http://autospeed.com/cms/title_Pisto...6/article.html
    Found it very helpful.
Apparently when the oil scraper rings dont do their job properly oil finds its way past the compression rings and your piston acts as a big oil pump. Makes for really high compression because oil doesnt compress as easily as air. This would explain the motor being so hard to turn over when the plugs were in. Also explains the blue smoke and the black piston tops and plugs.
