Default Alternator for 3SGTE on drivers side (rwd conversion)

    Hi there,

I'm a long time reader, minimal time poster on this forum (used to hammer the old one years ago)...

Anyway I'm doing a 3SGTE rwd conversion into my AE86 and am having a hard time finding an S series alternator that bolts up to the inlet side of the engine. Does anyone know what I can use? I've tried all rwd S model 80's celicas (SA6x) and ST14x Coronas but they all seem to be the same setup on the exhaust side. I have no room on the exhaust side due to my turbo and manifold.

    Any help/suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Joel

Cheers for that Cuts, I'll try and hunt one down.

Anyone know of any other S series motor with the alternator on inlet (driver's side) of engine.

    Thanks,

    Joel

so does the blacktop beams eng from the lexus have the alt on inlet or exhuast side?

anyway. i think i have a spare alt bracket for the sw20, tho from memory the crank pulley on the mr2 eng is a different size. ie the inner pulley is the same as the outer as oppossed to celica setup where the inner is smaller. cant remeber which one drives the alt tho.

i'd guess that if the crank pulley was wrocng size for your application it'd either over or under drive the alt.

will have a look see when i get home.

think there's also a mob over in the states that makes a light wieght alt braket to suit the mr2. as the stock bracket wieghs a ton and is bulky to the max.

on the celicas the inner part of the crank pulley drives the power steering pump and is smaller diameter, the outer is larger diameter and takes a wider belt) and drives alt and air con.
mr2 drives the alt off the inner one like jonno said, so you would need an mr2 crank pulley.
An alternator belt wouldnt fit on the inner part of a celica pulley.

Yep yep, cheers for the info guys.

I have a Celica version with the smaller inner diameter. I will only be running the alternator off the crank pulley (no other ancillaries). Looks as though I'll have to source the MR2 alternator, bracket and also crank pulley.

    Joel,

Looking at pics of mine (car isnt home atm) and reading that above ^^^ i'd say mine is probably not what i told you (although im sure i was told its off a 2s...) and is infact the SW20 item. Also, with regards to the belt, my alt lines up with the inner pulley on the crank and runs off that. My pulley (crank) is a GFB item, and is the smaller (ie doesnt have the larger outer pulley) item. Charges more than fine, never had any issues.

My 2C-T diesel Caldina had the alternator mounted down low on the side you're talking about (the inlet & exhaust sides are reversed to the S petrol motor). ie it was mounted at the bottom of the block on the rear of the east-west motor. Where the power steer pump is normally.

Seeing as these engines where interchangable with the S series engines, you may be able to find something with that. Though you'd prob have to get it from NZ.
Diesel alternator also has a higher output than petrol version.

    models you're looking for:
    diesel CE-10# Corolla, CT-19#, CT-21# Corona/Caldina/Carina,
bascially anything that had an upright 2C engine as this engine was also in Estima, Lucida, Tarago equivalents.

Alternatively, you could look at modifying a power steer pump bracket.

pretty sure the celica and mr2 alt are the same. both 70/80 amps depending on what gen it was from. bolt up the same.

also i read somewhere that the gfb pulley only suits the mr2, so if your crank pulley has the same diameter for the inner and outer pulley then its an mr2 item.

joel i'll check at home what i've got and work out what i want for them and let you know.

    It's under the intake manifold.

I should mention that I didn't use a mr2 alternator, just bracket. I used a diahatsu charade alternator which bolted up to the bottom mount perfect and lined up with the belts nicely. I made a top bracket which was easy. Allowed me to trim the mr2 bracket up which was good as there is some solid weight in the mr2 bracket.
