did you get the correct generation belt? gen2 and gen3 are diff.
Hi all i have a issue with my cam belt on my SW20 3SGTE. Its a brand new motor, new pumps, pullys and adjustabe cam gears, the problem is the cam belt was extremely hard to put on. we sqished up the tensioner as the manual states and when we finaly got the belt on and relesed the tensioner the belt was so tight that the tensioner didnt even move!! Help please i have a dyno on thursday and dont want to run the motor if we have done something wrong. will it free up after being run? has anyone else had this problem? HELP!!!

that was my first thought, i think they gave me a na belt so i used my old one off the motor and it was a bit better as it went on. But in saying that toyota parts suck balls, caus they have superseded parts and now have even confused themselvs and dont know what parts are for what car! ie try and get a new inlet manifold gasket for a GTE they have only one part # listed and it states its universal but it is actually a N/A gasket!! anyway definatly the right belt, as it came off the motor.

You should always count the teeth on the old belt then count the teeth on the new belt.
it sounds like it as less teeth than the old one. Do not attemp to statr the enginge before you have checked this. PLEASE

strat gen 2 178 teeth gen 3 174 teeth or 176 by memory and gen 4 and 5 cant remember![]()
u know there is a cylinder that tightens the belt dont you?
you have to pre-load load it and shove a bit of wire in it to hold it in
then you instal the belt and pull the wire out and it will snap out and tighten the belt
Sounds like he found the tensioner.Originally Posted by strat
Is it the pulley on the oil pump smaller on the gen 3?
Water pump pulley is smaller on the gen3 not sure about oil pump.

AAAAAGGH still no help boyz cheers 4 da input... it is the right belt pump etc... im thinking that all my parts are non genuine parts??? could that be it. the motor has been extensivly modified ie head & block shaved etc but this would make the belt have less tension i guess. caus all my previos motors the belts have gone on a peice of piss. Shit man dont know whats going on.

st185 (gen2) has 178 teeth
st205 (gen3) has 177 teeth.
i got supersceeded as well with the st205 one and the belt that was on the part number had 164 teeth, no good.
Does the motor turn? ie the belt isn't binding up?
All the pulleys lined up correctly?
If it's not binding, I don't know what the big drama is.
Different length belts do not affect the turn speeds of the pulleys relative to each other, that is determined by the pulleys sizes only.
Most belts do stretch a fair way over their life. Hence the reason there is a tensioner in the system to stop the belt becoming loose off the pulleys.
I've had lots of fan belts where I've had to lever the new replacement belt on because it was shorter than the old one.
Just double check you have released the tensioner pin. Can't remember, but is oil pressure supplied to the tensioner (I've never pulled the front off a 3S), but I know some cars do.
Its not binding up or anything like that and the timing is correct, as you can set the cam timing turn the motor over twice and the timing is in the same spot so spot on timing. My concern is the only way to get it on was with a old belt that would be "streched" az.

So the new belt doens't go on at all?
But you've used the used one off your old motor, and it only just goes on?
Is the belt running the right way around all of the pulleys?
Sometimes this can be mistaken. ie the fan belt on my VN looks like it'll go on about 3 different ways, but only one way is correct.
I know it's not the same analysis, but you get the principle.
Have you put the tensioners back on in the correct location? Sometimes there's more than one spot for things to bolt onto.
they havnt given you a 3sfe belt by mistake as that has square teeth ,not round like the 3sge has
Dont know i am running the original belt now and its still mad tight. But the strange thing is the gasket kit we got from prisision had all sorts of gaskets.... ie a N/A manifold to head gasket, but all gaskets for a CT26 turbo?? and a throttle body gasket for a gen3 60mm throtle body... im going to start a new tread on problems with Toyota original parts caus i think they have made BIG mistakes with superseading parts. Also the new staff at Cornes Toyota (Ulney S.A) dont know shit from clay and are completely useless.
