That would be awesome Wolf.....you don't let much hold you back do you
Price is gonna be killer though?
Hello All,
I'm trying to organize, all over the world, a Group Buy for a 6 speed gearset for our Celica Turbo 4x4.
I contacted a local famous gearsets builder, Bacci Romano ( http://www.bacciromano.com/ ):
next week I will have to go there with the ST205 gearbox I have home, so they could understand if it is possible to fit an extra gear, and the price of the kit ACCORDING TO QUANTITY.
So the more people interested in the Group Buy, the less the final price will be.
This is an idea of how the gear set should be:
Is there anyone that could be interested in this project ?
Please let me know.
Bye!

I hope to get 20/25 members all over the world...

Ratios maybe a little bit tall? Not by much but maybe drop 10-20kph off each ratio at redline?
I'm assuming the focus will be track work? I guess it comes down to the types of tracks you're running at.

The 1st gear is wanted longer because the stock one ( around 60kmh@redline ) is really too short, and the stock 2nd too long, when you have to do a winding road.
Every other gear as a step of 1700 to 1300 rpm, so quite a small step for a turbo, wide range, engine...
Really hope to reach the minimum number of partecipants...
anyone interested here in OZ ?![]()

Might be worth pushing this on the MR2 boards as well since the gearset should be the same for the E153. A lot of dreamers on the MR2oc tend to ask about 6 speeds for the 3SGTE.

Anyone know if there's somewhere that has the gear ratios listed for the 4 different model manual GT4s?
I only got an import book for the Caldina, so nothings listed, & I've tried Google, but not really getting any help.
I'd actually like for 1-4 to be pretty low (I agree with the 1st gear to 2nd gear gap) with 5th & 6th taller for "normal" driving.
Or even just 6th made for highway/long distance cruising (say 2000rpm at 100km/h)
BTW, Wolf, you may want to add the ST215 Caldina to your listSame gearbox, etc, just in a 5 door wagon body. And there was a heck of a lot more made of these than ST205s (pity most are automatic though
)
This is something I've thought about doing for a while now - I've even collected a copy of the six speed Corolla/Celica manual for linkage/spacing/adaption ideas along with a stash of E series boxes to bastardize during the process. My assumption was that the 5th and 6th gear would sit outside the main box, as the factory 5th gear does, with an extension housing between the box and end cover being utilised.
My primary aim in my thinking was to have a gearset to get the car up and moving quickly and still be competitive in higher gears - yep, I spent a bit of time watching EVO's launch too. As your ratio's depict a 1:1 fifth gear and over driven 6th gear was my desire too - I'm interested, and may know of a few other people here in Australia too, will pass it around.
geez, this is what toyota should have done from factory - what sorta price are you looking at for 1 single set (max price)
yeah i too would also be interested to know

bah, way to make the 205 box i found potentially obsolete
I am interested depending on price.

Now, while i have no use for this (just yet...), i am able to help you decide on ratios. I have a spreadsheet that i designed for such a task at uni and will tell you how fast it will accelerate and can alter the ratios to suit. As a bonus, it will also give you various outputs per gear: top speed, rpm change on shift, average acceleration, time in gear, along with time to any speed and even a quarter mile time. I would possible be able to configue it to give any other desired output. And it shows the trace on a graph too.
As part of my research, i also found recommended changes for a race gearbox. Now i know some guys will want to keep some sort of street drivability so i have included drops for a 5 speed and you can then choose a stupidly low 6th. Or you could just pick 6th for a decent cruise gear and work backwards to see what you get.
6spd (with the gear you are in before the change):
1 - 30-40%
2 - 25-28%
3 - 20-23%
4 - 17-20%
5 - 12-20%
5spd:
1 - 35-40
2 - 25-28
3 - 22-25
4 - 19-21
If you want me to try this for you, just let me know and i will need a few details to make it work. I can try any combination of ratios and will also recommend some of my own since i will be able to tweak the ratios, though i know you will be limited to the gear profile and teeth number.
i was just having a play around with the ratios as well, punched them into the CarTest software.
Made the 0-100 and the 1/4mile time slower by a poofteenth...which isn't overly surprising i guess.
Seems that the ratios proposed suit a very peaky engine.
Now I don't think i would want to build a super peaky turbo engine, seems a bit of a waste to me...
I like the idea of ignoring 6th, leave it very long for cruising.
Depending on the track, power etc etc. topping out the proposed 5th is a possibility, and then you have a fair drop to 6th.
Why not lengthen both 5th and 6th, and spread the rest a bit more.
