Throwout Bearing -> Packing with grease

hey guys,

we were having a discussion at Rod's the other night after my throwout bearing collapsed...

.. suggestion was to take my new OEM Toyota throwout bearing and pack it full of grease (more than comes supplied) before installing

just wondering what the communities thoughts were on this matter?

as in the one that pushes the clutch?
aren't they pre-lubed AND sealed, so the grease can't get out? if it could, then clutch could get contaminated..

if the seals are intact and serviceable, (ie, being new), then a bit more grease migth be ok, but maybe not necessary?

having bearing contact clutch fingers so it spins all the time is much more likely to kill it...

hmm on closer inspection it does look like there's a seal around it there

I think the bearing would be (almost) touching all the time wouldn't it? The spring in the slave cylinder makes sure of that

dont pack or grease it anymore Rob. Just put some copper grese or something on the gearbox output shaft splines, a little it where the clip will rub and chuck her back in. I thjink you may have just had a little too much fun with the old one!

almost touching is different to touching...
if the bearing is touching, then it spins at engine speed ALL the time = short bearing life.

noo idea if slave makes it touch or not...

then again, maybe they are meant to touch?

oh, and if you remove seal and pack in more grease... it might squish out when bearing is spinning fast..

Yeah you definitely do not want excess grease getting out and all over your clutch mating surfaces. Assuming you could grease the beaing there's no easy way of telling how much is too much because of the force the clutch fork puts on it.
