Electrical problems-Tacho

heyas,

i got this tacho right, never heard of the brand, on the face it has PRO TACHOMETER, with this weird cross like emblem over the O of pro, pic

and it has a few problems, i used my DC adjustable voltage regulator to check if it lit up and worked....but, no light comes on, some times the needle jumps, as high as 2.5k, but only when you slowly increase the voltage around 9V, i took it out to my car to test it, but still, no light.

i took off the rear cover, but i cant get to the electrics, i smelt the back of the gauge to check for any burnt smell, it has a really light smell of 'burning' to it, i am guessing this is why it doesnt light up, tomorrow ill test if the gauge reads correctly and if the shift light works accordingly, any ideas as to what 'could' be blown??

any way of fixing it?? i guess i could chop of the back half of the gauge if need be, then plastic weld it back on!!

anybody know/heard/seen any of these gauges before??

also it has 2 black wires, that arent connected to anything, but have about 2mm of insulation stripped, looks factory, any ideas wat the wires could be?? (memory?, xtra shift light??)

i seen that before... i gave that exact same tacho to a friend ... i still have the rear mounting bracket for it..

okay it should have a backlight controller with it, that allows it to be switched from blue to green... and to control how bright it is..

2mm of insulation stripped... sounds like something i left there to mark earth.?

if this is indeed the gauge i gave out, then yea it works.. but it's spring powered, not like autometer's gas powered

yea the needle seems spring powered!! the gauge work the only thing that doesnt is the illumination, i dont see no backlight controller, there is just the gauge! and 7 wires in total, signal/+ve/-ve/shift light +/shift light -/two black wires, about 6inches long with 2mm~ or so of insulation off the end missing.

did you sell the gauge to a fairly young bloke, was the gauge in the backseat?? did you also give him a autometer liquid filled oil pressure gauge?? if yes, then i guess it was you!! wat does this 'backlight' controller look like?? where does it hook up to?? maybe thats wat those 2 wires are??

hm.. i don't remember selling it.. i think i gave it away..

anyway the bloke i gave it to tuned my scooter

just to make sure we're talking about the same guy..

i did also give an autometer oil gauge but i don't think it was oil filled.. it was small though, 2 inch +...

the backlight controller is definitely missing as the two 6 inch wires do connect up to the controller thingo.. if i remember correctly it's a small backing plate thing, shaped like an L, has a knob (for brightness) and a switch (for blue or green).. the two wires off the guage connect to it... .. and the controller itself has wires for positive, negative, and parklight.. the shiftlight itself should be a "male" plug that connects to a 'female" plug coming out of the tacho..
