I can vouch for the banjo being very weak, Well i think mine was abnormally weak. Just before i put the rolla in to start the conversion i thought.. hmm ill see if i can do a line locker on the grass. rev it up, dump the clutch, touch the brake and SNAP! No more go.. Then i had to push it in the garage.

I got my diff of Dom-AE71 and i think he got it of someone else. It had the corona st141 discs on it with calipers. Maybe you could do that?

The other issues i find with the banjo's some of them don't even whine before going bang No warning, just driving along and then no diff. Can get away with BW whining before eventually breaking. A whine certainly makes sure you ease off so you can get home

What faulksy said. (Good advice by the way faulksy. Will be taking that into consideration for my panel van). If you're going to be putting out more power than stock, by all means, a diff upgrade is definately in order.

Good thing I've read about the TA22 celica diff's is they are quite suitable for a TRD LSD centre which will outlast a falcon/commodore style cone-style LSD.

faulksy: I haven't broken the diff - but I thought it would be wise to change over the diff when i upgrade the engine...I was thinking the TA22 diff because I was going to use the TA22 front struts for the brake upgrade, and thought i could keep it consistant with the wheels. Or do you guys know of any better solutions? (cheaper/easier)

P.S how do i tell if i have the bango already?

Have a look at your diff. i am sure that the BW have a octagonal backing plate and they will say borg warner on the diff pumpkin. i am not sure what banjo diffs look like though. if yours doesn't say BW then i guess it must be a banjo

thats a correct describition of a BW. the banjo are rounder housing.
can also tell thyem apart from the size of teh drums. BW have the large drums
also (could be very wrong) all aust build ones had BW and the jap ones had banjos

celica would keep same stud pattern so thats no a bad idea but of wanted better diff pintaras have same stud pattern. also pintara have huge rear discs. bigger then the commodores. also its not hard for someone that converts differents to change the stud pattern.

a wise decision to upgrade the diff if going to update the engine. otherwise going to need done anyway. the celica is probaly your cheapest upgrade and be acceptable if not abused

That would be a BW 78 series. Lots of gears and options available. eg. LSD, spool

And whoever rep'ed me and asked for this theard "22rep + this rep = what?" Your rep is worth 2

Faulksy towed a couple of my kerolla's back in the day when I blew my diffs.
Banjo's are so weak. Even abusing them with a mere 4k will snap spiders.

hilux & r31 are too heavy for a ke & the amount of torgue a 4age produces doesnt warrant this conversion imo....too much unsprung wieght will turn your handling to shit

i know of a ke than ran a 120y diff behind a 3tgte that saw constant abuse & it held up remarkably well

my pick would either be T, G or F series toyota

where do you get this theory from? it aint no 9 inch. now thats overkill. i noticed no difference in handling with a BW78 over the standard diff

just to let you know im trying to source some ra40 front struts for my ke30 upgrade.

see the document here : http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~bradw/FBU.html

I have a set of ta22 struts and i was going to use them but theres not much of an upgrade there. The disc are minimally bigger. Also i read(havent tried) that the ta22 struts need a bit of mod done to the control arm. This is why i chose the ra40 struts and we'll see how easy they go in.

hilux are F series (i think) but i was referring to the F series Crown. R31 is actaully an alright option but for the cost i think you could do better

faulksy, i guess it depends what you want out of the car. I'm a little biased towards circuit racing so i'd try to use weight to my advantage. A t series diff would be better suited to a 4a...strength wouldnt be an issue & it'd be 20kg lighter than a hilux. The more weight you're carrying on a live axle the worse your handling will be...thats just physics. Probably not much on a daily driver but if you want to milk every bit of performance you can then it seems logical to keep unsprung weight down.

in the end i guess its whatever floats your own boat

fwiw i've had a t series behind a turbo 4a for a few years & never had any problems

cheers thats the soprt of info i was looking for. i knew a t series would be strong enough for a 4age but was unsure on if it had the strength for forced induction. i guess i still feel more confident with a BW78 series if launches (ie. drags) were involved due to its extra size but on a track its extra dead weight

good contribution Variable + rep for you

the opinion is starting to swing. maybe a celica diff to start off with as its the easiest conversion and if not stronger enough in the future im sure you could easily sell it to a person with a ke30/55 as already modified to bolt in and get your coin back
