jzx81 trans tunnel will be alot bigger, as it would have been fitted with an r154 anyway,,

the mx83 trans tunnel need to be malested along the top (from the shifter hole toward the firewall....bout 30cm section,.

you also need to widen the tunnel, so give the sides of the tunnel a good pounding....

it took about 45 mins with a heavy dead blow hammer....while the car was on a hoist....if your doing it on the ground, have fun!

you may also need to cut open the shifter hole slightly....we trimmed off 5mm or so just for a nicer clearance

the jzx81 never came out manual so i presumed its got the same transmission tunnel as a mx83? It is going into a 81 so that would be good if thats the case. Fingers crossed. If its not the case does some one have that pic for me? Using a different account btw. Cheers

When I did mine, i just put the gearbox on, jacked it up to see where it fouled and marked it with a white paint marker thingy. I then removed gearbox and took to it with a big hammer. Did it under the car and it took about 20mins to get it to fit nicely. The tunnel is not that tough if you use a big hammer (one with a 1m type handle ) plus i did it lying under the car

The JZX81 did come out in a manual.
Thats why the pedals are popular, bolts straight into the cressida.

The pic above shows where you need to bash, but you dont have to the the JZX81 at all.

You douche... The JZX81 never came out with a manual transmission.

The GX81 did however, but it wasn't ever fitted with an R154. Get your own info right before you go correcting other people.

Next time, Ill google first, and not assume, with the amount of Manual JZX81s out there that it is factory.

That doesnt change the fact that you dont have to bash the trans tunnel in the JZX81 tho.
(I hope im right on that fact)

Sadly i'm not so sure about that. The problem is that the R154 is a fat bitch.

This is where i'm making an assumption, but i reckon the MX83 and the JZX81 have the same trans tunnel and that the W-series boxes fit without bashing but the R154 doesn't.

    Well.

I think I'll go back to only reading the forsale threads..

I had a quick look, and couldnt find any of the information about bashing a JZX81 trans tunnel.

In anycase, Blinky now has the details of where to bash, and he can let us know hot it all goes.

    Thanks Blinky.

Every jzx81 frontcut I've seen which has been retrofitted with an R154 has also had the tunnel bashed or the gearbox crossmember spaced WAY down.

I had to bash the tunnel quite a lot in my GX81 when replacing the 1ggte/W58 with 1JZ/R154.

The area towards the back on the drivers side of the box near where the rear housing bolts to the box is the one that requires the most clearance in the tunnel, unfotunately that's also the area that seems to have extra re-inforcement in the body so you need a big hammer.

Its not what i was expecting. Quite an easy job. Took me about twenty mins with a normal ball pein hammer.

    Thanks for the assistance

for future reference. obviously removing all carpet surrounding it, i used an oxy and a small hammer to do my ma61 tunnell to fit the r154...took no time at all due to it being red hot...just need two people to ensure nothing on the inside catches alight.
