Default *2tc fuel problem on hills*

    hey guys

when i bought the car it had a aftermarket electric fuel pump installed & it drove fine, but when i started going up a hill it would start to kangroo hop but not stall, even if i opened her up. i made it stall once & checked the float bowl & it was empty

so i took all the electric fuel pump stuff out & put a used fuel pump in (it looked smaller), i took it up the same hill & it was going alright & then tried to cut out, so i stoped & let the fuel get in again & just went down the hill.

so anyone got any ideas, im considering the fuel pump is to small as it was physically smaller by a bit

    thx heaps

Have you checked your fuel pickup?

Is you fuel tank clean? Parents once bought a second hand car from a dealer... it presented with the same kind of problems... turned out to have a beer coaster in it... (absolutely no idea how it got there)

Is your fuel filter clean? half filled with water may present the same symptoms.

    good luck mate

Unless there is a pipe fixed to the lowest part of the tank, which is doubtful (although early VW Beetles worked that way..... with a tap, kinda like most motorbikes)... it will have a pipe entering the tank from the side or the top, perhaps near the fuel sender.... maybe that pipe has broken.. does this only happen when the car has less then ..say half a tank of juice?

does you pump make that "tick tick tick" sound, if so, keep an ear out next time you go up a hill and listen for it speeding up... which would mean that the pump has no fuel... which I would take to mean that it is sucking air (as the fuel has ran away from the pickup)...

Or Maybe the T series is just no good...my advice, replace it with some 4AGE goodness

Check your in line fuel filter if you have one & replace it,

Also there should be a fine mesh brass filter on the inlet to the carby, it might be under the needle & seat or it could be behind the fitting on the inlet to the carby, but they can block up & will heavily restrict the inlet fuel flow, just remove, clean & refit it ..

Also check the fuel height in the carby with the engine idling on flat ground, someone may have set the level to low ..

Also check to see you have suffecient fuel flow from the pump at the carby inlet, i can't remember the correct flow rate at the moment, but a good workshop manual should tell you ..

    hey guys

wa5- it happens at any amount of fuel, although ive only even put 3/4 in it.
when the electric pump was in it i could hear it tick tick tick, & when i went up hills it stayed the same not faster of slower ect.
BUT i made it stall once once with the electric pump up a massive hill i jumped out & the float bowl was empty.
I havnt heard of this problem on any other T series so mabye i got a dud or something stupid happened

lexsmaz- i only replaced the in line fuel filter a short while ago,but ill get a new one this week any way.
i rebuilt my first carby & soaked all parts for about 3 weeks in a home brew of petrol, wd 40, carby cleaner, & it still happened with that carby. i adjusted the float level myself & when idling it sits right in the middle of the white dot (eg spot on to specs).

so i know that the problem is before the carby & it isnt the carby or electric fuel pump or fuel. so mabye fuel filter or fuel pickup.

ALSO the metal hose coming out of the bottom of the fuel tank has been snapped by the old owner so he could put the electric pump ect in their, i removed it all & just ud a bit of fuel hose. & no leaks

thx heaps guys for the help

So you need to now check the fuel flow to the carby with the engine idling ...

Also when you cleaned out the carby did you remove the needle & seat & did you find the brass mesh filter i was talking about ?..

    hey mate

lexsmaz- kk i understand, dotn i have to disconnect a fuel line to the carby after the fuel pump & crank it for ... seconds then check if the fuel that came out is in specs

yeah i found the brass mesh thing u were taking about

I had same sort of problem,
turned out to be the dyno tune shop got the supply and return fuel lines crossed
over.Ran fine down the road but when you loaded it up the float bowl ran dry.
It was on a 2TB twin Carb.
    Just a Maybe.

    Cheers Ian.

There are 2 ways, both with similar results, fit a t piece to the fuel line near the carby & run the car at idle & check the flow, or remove fuel line & start & run the car checking the fuel flow ..

But if you are runing a return line you could check flow off the return ..

Those pumps are designed to only push fuel, not suck fuel. When there is no gravity feed to the pump they can't suck (well they can, but only a small amount mainly due to syphon effect). I've had the exact problem before. A good mechanical pump fixed the problem as they suck quite well. There could also be a minor fuel leak on the suction side of the pump that allows air to get in. What type of car is it? Does you engine have provision for a mechanical pump?

    hey guys

sorry for the delay been testing it the last few days & seeking advice from work

Ical- i doubt it but ill give it a try if i cant fix it

lexsmaz- that will be my next thing to try

hemi twofifteen turbo- its a 1976 celica with a 2tc, that comes standard with a mechanical pump.

OK GUYS HERE IS THE STRANGE PART, i replaced the fuel filter just in case & took it to the hill. i let it idle for a few mins at the bottom on level ground, then i took off got to the start put it in second & put my foot flat to the floor. it stayed at 3000 the whole way, i got past where it usually stalled & got almost to the top before it started to kangroo hop, then i backed off for a second & then about 80% throttle & i got all the way up the top.

so now im thinking that i havnt been driving properly???
because with the electric pump it ran out of fuel, so every time a hill came up i would use as less throttle as possible.
but this time i opened up the secondaries, which i cant remember doing before

because im running a cable throttle ive put 2 springs on to pull the throttle back, one for the throttle & one for the secondaries. so i can feel the secondaries opening as its harder to push the throttle

    any ideas

    thx heaps

do you think the 22 was fitted with the electric fuel pump to attemp to fix an existing problem.
another member had a 22 with a similar problems, couldnt get up hills unless he shifted into 2nd and booted it, but that was with a 2tg with wild cams. is there any chance somone has blocked off / removed the ventilation piping at the fuel tank also if the excelleration changes at 80% the excellerator pump in the carby may be worn out.
also the same 22 as i mentioned before had a drop tank so it wouldnt run with a push style fuel pump alone so we fitted the stock fuel pump together with the electric pump and it was ok even with the wild cams, i ran it at easternats at sandown it didnt run out of puff down the straight, no probs with performance.

    hey

nyce22- nah the owner i bought it off told me to put it back to mechanical pump.
the accelerator thing in the carby is fine as i checked it in accordance with the manual

ventilation piping hey, well i know there is no charcoal canister atm, so mabye the old owner blocked off the pipes that go into the fuel tank??? JUST MABYE

    thx

Red face Re: *2tc fuel problem on hills*

on my 22 theres a breather hose running from the tank to the filler neck
2 pipes from the top of the tank running underneath the car, ones the return line and the other one goes to the carby and another one is a hose with what looks like a oneway valve (visable only with the rear seats out) thats alot of hoses and pipes for a 1973 car with no polution gear my friends one with the drop tank used to stink of fuel bad, it used to make my eyes water-bad. yours is 76 ta23 with 2t motor- is should have very similar tank with charcoal canister extra like you said. would somone have made a mistake and accidentaly run the return line as the inlet to the carby or is that impossible.i hope im not confusing you too mutch.
