    Default Got a Turbo question

    Hey guys,

    I have a query about having a water feed for a T25.

The car in question is my AE86, 4AGTE 162rwkw.

I have have had the car, setup and running for about 4 years, with no problems.

I did it all myself, except dyno tuning. When I set it all up, I had NEVER set up water lines to the turbo..... Because........ When I got the car tuned (years ago), my guy who does it for me (Pro-stock drag mechanic, so he knows his stuff), said the water lines did not really act as a cooling system for the turbo, but rather to heat up the water quicker on startup, reaching operating temp sooner.

So I left it that way.

4 years later, turbo is still in good cond, and have never had issues.

But after looking at many simular setups, I have never ever seen the water lines NOT hooked up.

    Is my tuner correct?

Can anyone clarify the matter of wether the water actually cools or not?

Iam guessing it does both, but how much differance in temp would it make and if the turbo would be affected by it?

    Wadda ya reckon?

if you don't have water cooling, then your turbo is only oil cooled.
water cooling removes some thermal load from the oil, and makes your oil last longer...

    or something like that..

i think your mechanics reasoning is wrong. but at least in your case, not hooking up the lines has not been fatal yet.

wasn't running an oil cooler either, untill recently (6months ago)
was using Royal purple oil, changing every 3 months. Oil never looked or smelt burnt....

the t25 in the feral i hooked up the water lines, the t25 in the feroza i didnt. it's rather easy to hook some in anyways, just put some brass tee's into the cars heater lines, reduce from the tee to the turbo. eg. i ran 10mm lines to the turbo.

Every car manufacture that built a turbo engined car in the last 15+ years, uses water cooled turbos. I think that should answer your question.

some turbo's dont even have any water provisions, just means after a fang you have to wait a bit longer before you shut the car down.

ofcourse the water cools thats all it does.
i dont have a funny or cool signature.

Water does help cool the turbo and in turn keep the engine oil at cooler temperatures. Basic Physics, if water temperature is cooler then the temperature of the Turbo's core, water will conduct heat from the turbo . As you have proven the turbo will work without it, but the turbo and your engine will last longer with the water connected, It is there for a reason and It should be connected.

The main significant temperature difference will be engine oil temperature .

The water does assist in the cooling of the turbo though it's hard to say how much difference in temperature running the water lines would make.
Only way to tell would be to check oil temps with and without the water supply fitted. I don't think not having it connected will harm the turbo significantly as long as you treat the turbo as you would treat any "oil only" cooled turbo. Primarily allowing it to cool before shutting down. The main reason for turbo timers.

zactly. it is just to help the oil survive that extra amount, and to help stop it cooking in the bearings.

water is in the engine to cool the oil. if you don't have water cooling at the turbo, then the heat has to be passed from the oil to water in the engine - higher average temp of oil in the block.

of course if you are changing the oil so frequently, then it may make no difference, but you might be able to extend the oil changes to 6 months or 12 months instead. is your wallet

    Hell yeah.
Especially with Royal Purple. With the state of the AUS vs US dollar at the moment that gear ain't cheap.

Legend you can buy the fittings as individual bits (speedflow) or in kits (Sonic/MTQ) from most good Auto retailers ie autObarn. If you want to save coin then the speedflow is cheaper but you will need to know the thread sizes you require.

    Hi,

I Agree with everybody else, it will help cool your turbocharger and the oil too, which is always a good thing. Better to have the lines attached then not I guess?
