Default 20v problems - the wrx

ok guys we have just put a new 20v in my brothers sx rolla, (had a 20v silver before but we though it needed a refresher)
    so its in she starts
however it idels rough and when reving sounds like a wrx, at first i though spark so i changed the spark plugs nothing and then leads were changed to no avail. I am using the old igniter for old engine as this was working fine.

I have looked at almost every vacum lead and also to no avail.

I still belive its spark but i dont know where else to go!

the leads i dont think i can mess up as it says
    (on the dizzy)
    2 3
    1 4
so assume this is how ther go in as it refering to the lead number, is this correct?

    any help is appreciated

Could ignition or cam timing be out a little?
Is the ecu definately good? My 16V ecu stuffed out and it ran like crap for no apparent reason till I replaced it!
Does it still run fine and just sound strange? Or is it unhappy to rev and un-driveable?
    Good luck with it!
    Cheers!

made sure all hoses like the break booster hose are hooked upto the intake plenum? just a wild guess, but took me a good wile to sort out why a 3sge was ideling like shit and sounded like a wrx.

yeah im inclined to think the timing is out. could it be 180 degrees out? looking normal but isnt. i remeber my ae82 had that problem and after a late night shit happens.

    just brought from importer!

timing didnt occur to me, so that i would have to say that has to be it! but i cant do much there because i dont have a timing light !

and cant be ecu because it was working fine as i said it was a 20v silver that came out and a new one that went in, so it cant be the ecu well at least i hope not!

thanks for all of the quick responses guys!

New as in fresh rebuilt but you have cleared that up
Hate to say this but. could be far worse than timing being an import engine .
    Head gasket
bent valve - done a comp test ?
cam belt slipped a tooth - you should be able to check that one!
Cracked ring land on piston ( prob not this one!)

    PRAY its just timing!

well thats fine none of that really bothers me as there is a 3 month warrenty! so im not phased by it, as its all covered.
yes compression test was done, but they said the compression was 230 each cyl. (sounds high but if they are all the same thats good enough for me)

I'm going to go with timing as well. My GZE sounded for all the world like a rex when I got the cam valley full of water. If you don't have a timing light, just loosen the dizzy and advance/retard it, in the middle you'll hit the sweet spot where it'll idle smooth (you'll be able to hear it) This is by no means accurate, but it will get the car running smooth. Also check your vacuum advance (if the car's fitted)

Have you tried pulling a lead off when its running to see if if you can isolate a cylinder.
i.e if you pulloff the no. 1 lead when its running and there is no change to the way it runs you no that the prob is with no. 1 and if it get worse then you no its ok.
If this doesnt work have a close look at the coil and cap to make sure that it doesnt have a small crack and is arcing out.
