I would have thought you would need the scanner to get the codes from an OBDII ecu. I have one here if you need one.
I'm looking for a list of diagnostic codes that relate to a VVTi 2JZGTE
I can only find lists that relate to non-VVTi ones
I've pulled the check engine light codes out of my engine ECU and what to know what they are
Edit, yes I know I could use an OBDII scan tool... but I don't have one
Cheers
Wilbo

You can pull codes via the check engine light by connecting Tc to E1 (GND) in the diagboxOriginally Posted by madmont
The codes then get flashed out on the check engine light in the same fashion as pre-OBDII
Just need to find a whole lot of codes that aren't listed for pre-OBDII (I.e. 62,63,65 etc)

wilbo,
Where in qld are you? Long shot, but I'm on the Gold Coast and have a scantool.
In Brisbane, Fairfield for the next few days...
Cheers
Wilbo
Guys, the scantool connects to the BODY ecu, not to the engine ECU so forget it.. sorry..

So are you saying the 2JZ engine ECU is not OBDII compliant? I'm not trying to disagree, just interested to know.
No.
I'm saying that toyotas with OBDII have the OBDII connector wired to the BODY ECU, not the engine ECU, and they communicate via the multiplex bus. I haven't seen any OBDII toyotas that don't have multiplex - I could be wrong there.
I've also been told that Australian OBDII is not true OBDII because it's not legislated here in the same fashion as in the US so the manufacturers don't go to the expense of full implementation.
And which 2JZ engine ECU are you talking about? There are plenty of 2JZ ECUs that don't have OBDII....

Good info, thanks for that.. I assumed by Wilbo's avatar that the 2JZ he is referring to is in the original car. But hey, I'm new here... I haven't long had this scantool, and just trying to learn more. From what I have read also 2006 onward in aus is OBDII legislated. So they should all work. I have tried several pre 2006 vehicles that do not work despite having the connector.
My 97 Jeep Wrangler being american does work however... as OBDII has been legislated since 96 over there.
On a slight high-jack note. I have a '99 3RZ not in the original vehicle, with the check light coming on, anyone know how to get the codes out of it?
I do have a Tc pin in my engine bay loom, but shorting it to earth didn't seem to make the light blink. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong.
If you do get a scantool onto it wilbo (or if you are down the coast I will give it a shot) I would love to know if it works or not.
Cheers
Wilbo won't have a scantool port.... he only has the engine ECU and none of the other ECUs...
My 99-2005 IS200 has the port but I haven't tried a tool on it yet. The manual refers to a Toyota scan tool, but haven't seen one or know anything about it.
I'll have a chat to a Euro specialist about the 2006 thing - curious He was saying none of the earlier cars had the full OBDII implementation even though the US versions did - so while some of it was implemented (error codes, etc), not the full thing - perhaps your Wrangler is in the same boat).
Tc pin is the Test pin for Cruise, not for engine - TE or TE1 is for the engine. Not too sure why Wilbo's worked with Tc....

Mos,
I have read some methods involving using the Tc pin instead of the Te1 pin.
My 3rz ecu does not have a Te or Te1 pin coming out of it. I even called toyota and asked how they get the codes out, they said they have a special toyota diagnostic tool, but they were no more help than that. (The guy on the phone didn't even know where it plugged in, and wouldn't put me through which I can understand)
According to the Tacoma manual I have (closest thing to a hilux I could find) the ODBII protocol is supported by my scan-tool. But I am yet to find out which pin on the ECU is the signal line. Seeings I don't have the body-loom for my engine. But also Hilux's don't have a body ECU that I am aware of.
Is there another thread for this? I feel bad for highjacking wilbo's thread.
I have had a look around for the error codes you have listed Wilbo, but to no avail yet.
Cheers
If it is ISO protocol Should be the SIL pin on the ECU which goes to number 7 pin on the 16 pin OBD2 connectorOriginally Posted by davewanna

Tacoma Manual says ISO - and referring to my internal 3RZ ECU pics, that pin is there and looks connected. So I will have to see what I can see. Thankyou very much for that madmont.
All this talk of OBD reminded me of something I read on this forum years ago, so I went looking.. Turns out it was the thread Wilbo started about OBDI and reading it with an atmel.
I also have a strong interest in Pic micros and reading the ECU data. I currently have a pic-based climate control unit in my car that reads sensors directly (ECT, IAT, TPS, etc) and have been considering how easy it would be to read all that info from the OBD information. That would simplify things.
Depending on how motivated I get, I think I know what I'll be doing for the next 3 days...
Cheers all.
I do not know if this will help but here are a couple of pages of OBD2 Generic DTC Definitions. let me know if you want any more

Mos,
The Engine ECU has a pin marked SIL, which as Madmont rightly points out goes to the ECU and the standard OBDII connector
Tc also goes to the engine ECU on the JZA80 ECU, which has a stand alone ABS control unit...
Mos: Have a look at the UK supra forums site, there are a few people there that say they have tools that are reading ODBII data from JZA80 VVTi 2JZGTE (Which don't have a body ECU )
ODBII Codes are slightly different to what I'm talking about however!
Madmont: Your list there is of the standard ODBII codes... which seems to be different to what I pulled...
I.e. I also got code 21 which is O2 sensor (on pre-OBDII 2JZGTE), that one was expected as the O2 was unplugged... however the other codes that I got aren't OBDII codes, and they aren't in any pre-OBDII list I've been able to find!
Cheers
Wilbo
