Count all the splines on both.
We were trying to do the same at Lindens a few months back and had the same dilemma. Spline count was different although they were both a340 converters.
Well i went to change the gearbox in the celica on the weekend and it didnt work out to well. I ended up having to remove the whole motor and box to change it because there is no room for a spanner inbetween the firewall. I have a 1jz and 1jz a340 box that was in the car and had a spare 1ggte a340 to swap. I changed the bellhousing on the 1g box to a 1j and then tried to wind the 1j convertor in and that just didnt want to work. I tried a few different things like putting the box in gear, in nuteral, put the tail shaft in and spinning it, i even held the gearbox up vertical and it just wouldnt wind in. I then wound the convertor into the old shagged box and it went in first go and then the next 2 times just to see if i got lucky. I then grabbed the 1g convertor and tried to wind that into the 1g box and no go. Any idea's? are there any differences between the boxes? Is there something im forgetting or doing wrong?

Tip the box on its arse hole with the input shaft to the sky and being very gentle lower the convertor down in a rotating backward and foward motion and it will go straight in.
Make sure you have the oil pump as close to being aligned before you start .
A340,s are a bitch to get it in sometimes but if you do it this way you will see what i mean.

Are the 1G and 1JZ splines are the same?

There are 2 different spline counts, 1 of the 1G boxes i have is the same as 7M and 1J but the other isn't so there are atleast 2 if not more.Originally Posted by Mos

Also replace the front seal if you've not done so already, especially if you've spent the day dicking around with it - a $3 seal makes it hard to justify pulling the whole assembly apart again, when you notice that pool of trans fluid underneath the bellhousing. Don't forget to lube up the torque convertor snout too!
Sounds dirty doesn't it?!
yeah looks like the splines were differentwent and got myself a 1jz box but now im going to have to re - wire the home made shift box which i have no fucking idea whats what?

also had the same problem but with trying to put a 7m a340e gearbox in to replace the 1ggte a340e
qute a few things different:
speedo output is on opposite sides
extra wiring on the 7m box
different shifter linkage setup
cheers
7M and 1GGTE boxes interchange but you have to keep the engines torque converter .
Dave
Not always, as i stated earlier i have 2 1G boxes here that are both different, 1 is 20 and the other a 26 spline box.
cheers
