Default HELP: bad noise from under car :(

Just driving home today I heard a knocking noise, it' not the engine cause it does not happen when stopped with clutch in, or when rolling with clutch in.

the noise get gets quicker the faster the car goes. I can hear the noise in all of the gears, but not when I creep the car forward in 1st

is this a gearbox fault or a diff fault?

    the car is a 1974 celica, with a r151 gearbox (i think) bolted to a 3tgteu with a standard ta22 diff.

is there anything I can do without pulling the gearbox out or the diff out?? (can remove tail shaft if it will help)

Anyone know any good gearbox places in Brisbane? last time I took the car into "the diff and gearbox shop" in wooloongabba they did not do their job properly.

I heard a volvo diff is a good option to replace the stock ta22 diff, which one and how much modification will it need?

is it possible the fit a t50 gearbox to a 3tgteu? or if anyone has a good w5x series gearbox that will bolt to a 3tgteu?

    Thanks in advance,

    Marvin

    hi marvin
start checking the easy things first
check to see if your wheel nuts are tight
then check you're uni joint bolts
it may sound stupid, but check your front wheel bearings coz if they are loose it can cause a clunking sound
try ( in a safe area) rolling the car down hill without the motor running and see if the noise is still there
it all comes down to a process of elimination
    good luck

    ^^^ what he said

but, get the car up on jacks asap and check everything you can see in the drive-train (e.g. loose bolts/nuts, big oil leaks, rotate drive shaft by hand and listen for noise spots)

    Hi Marvin,
Had a similar problem with my brother charade when he put a heavy duty clutch/new gearbox in. Theres a little pin in the clutch/pressure plate (don't know exact name) which wasn't put in properly and didn't sit flush. When the clutch engaged, we heard a knocking like that which you describe. Maybe it could be that...
Have to drop the gearbox out to fix it tho...

went to "the gearbox and diff shop" (yes that is their name) in the gabba. they told me it was the gearbox, it had lost a tooth. They also said it must have been from doing burnouts in the car and will not fix it under warranty.
It has been less than 6 months, I have had the car back to them at least 3 times and there is no way I have done burnouts in the car.

Anyone know what I can do from here? I'm out $1500 for a gearbox that makes a knocking noise.

Check that someone hasnt put zipties around your tailshaft so that the tail taps the car body?

marvin - can you put up a pic of the gearbox?

    R151 doesn't make sense code wise unless it's a ute g/box (should be W58, W57, W55)

... and if it's a R154, a mildly-tuned 3tgteu isn't going to produce the kind of torque that smashes gearboxes unless you are flat-shifting.

btw: going back 3 times suggests they've got a litany of things wrong during the original install. Have you got other transport so you can remove and inspect the gearbox yourself?

yeah, I've got other transport at the moment, but I'll probably take it to another place and hopefully get the $400 W57 that xcedricx has for sale installed

then pray that the stock diff holds
