yep, just grab an USDM RA20/21 engine X-member, straight bolt in.
Yes it has to be engineered because AUSDM TA22 never came with an 18R.
Can anyone tell me if an 18R into a TA22 is a goer?
What mods. need to be done?
Does it have to be engineered?
Thanks![]()

2T-G - Half the valves but twice the fun.
If you make your own engines mounts, sure. But why?
What do you expect to get out of a 18R-G that you cant get from a 2T-G. Heaps of aftermarket support for 2T-G, nothing for 18R-G. 2T-G has an awesome revvy boreXstroke, 18R is a truck motor.

18rg you can get bored out pistons up to 10:1 comp. With not much mod werk you can get a 21 or 22r crank in a stroke it to 2.4l (inc bored pistons) not hard to get cams relobed. Easy to get decent carbs ie 45mm webers. Been quite a few efi setups going for 18rg lately so earier to make into turbo - can't honestly think the last time i saw an efi setup for 2tg for sale. Kameari does the vernier cam gears. WHAT MORE WOULD YOU WANT FOR THE 18RG????
In response to your question though i think TORQUE is one thing you'll get from an 18rg that you won't from a 2tg.......
Anyway, for the conversion a usdm ra21/22 xmember would be ideal but at over $250us to get it posted here it's hardly worth it. Get any r series x member (ra40, ra60 celica etc) engine mounts and weld them onto the ta22 xmember - may need a bit of cutting and shutting etc. You'll also need a front sump 18r sump and oil pickup. don't forget the ta22 has a t50 gearbox so you'll need a w5x gearbox and that then needs custom mounts. Becuase your engine is 25% bigger you'll most likely need engineer/blue plate which would probably also need brake upgrades etc. It's not really documented on here too well but if you search you'll find the pieces to the puzzle. Expect it to cost in excess of 3k to do a good job of it (inc brake upgrade, engine, gearbox etc)
I'll be starting my members ride soon on doing it so it will actually be well documented (i hope) so others can follow. My plans are 18rg with big cams, w57 box, pug/lux/corona brake upgrade and mx23 diff with rt142 discs.
There seems to be alot more 18rgs out there than ra23/8's so there are always a couple available. If i could find a decent ra23/8 at a good price i would just do it to that but i've now got a 22.....
Anyway, good luck. I'll let you know if it is worth it!

Hey Roadkill,
Great info. Looking forward to your 18rg efforts!
Cheers
...i run an 18RG in my '22 and yeah it would be a bit of friggin around to get it to happen but it is well worth it and the old 'RG is a good strong gutsy motor that shouldn't give you too many troubles over the long haul.
....best of luck if you are going down that path![]()
