Mate, I would say that it wont bolt straight into place, not sure about the bell housing, check the TIO thread. Shouldnt be hard to get it to fit either way, and they definitely have good torque.

The old hiace(85) is getting pretty tired engine wise, am looking at options was thinking of a 5sfe at first for its low down torque but a little to much work as the dizzy is out the back which means aftermarket ecu. Then theres the 4y efi which is the go i think unless the 22r-e will fit as the main goal is more torque and power.
Anyone know if the 22r-e will bolt straight in and to the gearbox?

I think you should PM "Hen" from these forums as as far as I have understood and seen, he is building his old Hiace camper into a drift car and in the process is doing a 4ye conversion. Might be of some assistance.

Actually 3Y -> 4Y-E. But the bit about the drift campervan of doom is correct (some OLD photos).
I can check, but I think the Hiace has a W5* (or similar C** box). The 22R-E should also be bolted to a W5*, so if you can get the bellhousing with the 22R-E then you could well be able to bolt the existing box to it.
This is mere speculation at the moment, but I should be able to check the trans code in the next couple of days.
As for the engine going in, I'd say space would be the main concern. Not a lot of room under the seats.

I got a 86 liteace; 2y, G series box (i think G52?) so im assuming the hiace would have the same. W series box doesnt have the sideshift on the rear
Yes, it's meant G**, not C** as I wrote originally. I think G = W, just with the linkages for the shifter, so hopefully the existing Hiace box will bolt to the bellhousing off the back of the 22R. Some Googling tends to support the G box bolting to a W5* bellhousing, though nothing is definitive.

So would it be best to get another hiace to test fit first? as this is going into a work van so need as little down time as possible.
Yeah, best way is to have a setup van, and modify all the crossmember, mounts, wiring etc all before hand, and just do a 1 for 1 swap, then flog off the setup van for what you paid for it.

Thanks to James Cameron's Terminator films, we know that robots are stronger, faster, tougher and more Austrian than the rest of us.
4AGZE has not the capacity required to provide both the torque and power... you would really need to play with cams and compressor cogs to get it close to right. I wish people would stop suggesting putting 4A motors in large vehicles, they are a fun motor for small machines, but not heavier vehicles, you do need capacity at some stage (or the 1GZ would never have been invented)

The gze has a fair whack of torque and power, certainly more of both than the suggested 22RE, but I was actually joking in reference to everyone else throwing 4AGs or suggesting 4AGs in everything![]()

Got the motor(with whole car) so far the difference is the sump is around the wrong way, I've read that the 18r sump is the rear type and bolts on so that is the next thing to source.
