Yeah check engine light appeared sometimes, didn't flicker though.
I'll borrow another ECU tomorrow arvo and see how it goes.
sounds much like what happened to my jza70, which also appears to be stuffed ECU.
sometimes it would start and drive fine, then all of a sudden start doing all sorts of crazy shit.
are you getting flickering check engine light?

Borrowed an auto 1GGTE ECU and couldn't try it because the pinouts are different (my 1G is manual, or could be different revision engine)..
BUT.. I did find today that the battery is 100% dead. Not even reading 1V on two Fluke multimeters.. maybe this is the problem? It's wierd though because the battery seemed fine last Friday, no problems cranking the car etc.. I tested the battery and alternator over a week ago and they were working fine then.
So.. will try a new battery now![]()
Today I put a brand new battery in and started it up.
Started fine (great actually), idled fine, I let it warm up and drove it around for 5-10minutes, still has lowered power. In that time I stopped and idled a bit and there were no dramas.
Then when I got back home I let it idle for 30seconds and noticed a dip in revs for a second.. so I blipped the accelerator and then after that it chugged, stalled and now won't start.![]()
I've run out of ideas and am going to take it to a mechanic now![]()
maybe try another AFM if you can borrow one?Originally Posted by Jabtronic

I did, I've tried two.
Havn't been able to try another ECU though, because mine has different pinouts to the one I've borrowed. Will take a pic..

Here's a pic. My ECU is on the left with the yellow plugs.
My ECU has 10P | 18P | 24P plugs, the A/T ECU has 26P | 16P | 22P
EDIT: Apparently my 1G is a Gen 2, the ECU I've borrowed is from a Gen3.
Version 1 : Yellow ECU plugs, yellow injectors, W-A intercooler, 7psi
Version 2 : Yellow ECU plugs, yellow injectors, A-A intercooler, 9psi
Version 3 : Yellow or Grey ECU plugs, lime green injectors, A-A intercooler, 11psi

Okay, firstly, make the car start.
Then throw the multimeter across the battery whilst it's running.
You want to be seeing 13 - 14 volts. If it's below that, then the alternator is shot. Draining the battery, and causing poor idle and driving due to shit voltages.
Secondly, if the alt shows up fine, and the new battery isn't going flat, check all of your intercooler piping for leaks and cracks.
Alternator is fine, it was the first thing I checked, I've checked for vacuum leaks also. The battery was old and wasn't secured so it could move around a bit, I'd say that's why it died but we'll soon see.
And cheers Vash, you're a legend! I'll have to come up and grab it sometime, will send you a PM![]()

Whoo! My z20 is up and running again The auto electrician found that the loom running in front of the engine was rubbing on a pulley, and was shorting one of the AFM wires which was overheating something in the ECU. So he simply fixed the wire and secured the loom up better with some plastic cable holder things instead of the Toyota bracket.
I knew it would be something simple, but even still it took him almost 3 hours to diagnose and find.
