Angry I think I Fubarred my bonnet hinges

Went to open my bonnet last night on my RA28 and it would only open about 1/4. The hinges seemed to be binding. A bit of jiggling and moving later I finally freed the hinges and got it open to find that the head of the rivets in the hinge pivot points had hooked behind the main brace causing the main brace to be bent out of shape. Has this happened to anyone else? Are my hinges most likely f@#ked?

    hi glen
carefully mark around the bonnett hinges where they bolt on to the bonnett
remove the bonnett then tap the rivets with a hammer using something solid on the other side of the rivets
this is a common problem once they start to get worn , but with a gentle massage they can be coaxed to work again its most likely to be your L/H hinge

Hey Ian, on that note, you got any spare bonnet hinges for me?

I could use some new ones, mine are starting to get bent.

Thanks I'll give that a go. It was the LHS that stopped first. I'll give them a good lube too while I'm there.

Amazing what can be made right again with a hammer and dolly. You just need a good hinge to compare with, then bend hammer and mould the bent sucker back into shape. Be careful when peening the rivets, get them too tight, and it is game over. If that happens drill the rivet out and fit a bolt with a collet, and self locking nut.

Lube the hinges with a spray grease, WD40 and other low viscosity lubricants do not do the job!

    cheers Chuck.
