    Default Wet Cylinder Liners

This is 1 of those think out loud sought of questions. Do the cylinder liners for an aluminium block engine have to be made from cast iron (nodular iron I believe)?
Can other more readily available materials (mild steel and stainless steels) be used to make a wet sleeve cylinder liner, or are the wear characteristic the determining factor?
Anything else to consider? Thermal expansion? Oxidation/rusting?
OC would have to be the man for this 1
