    Default Smallport Differences

    Hello All.

I'm going to rebuild my smallport which is to be dropped into my ae86.

Does anybody know if there will be any differences in parts between the bigport and smallport?

In particular main bearings and gaskets?

i ask this to avoid being stuffed around by sprints/autopro etc.

as i have had very little luck with them so far in sourcing parts as it is an import motor

any help would be greatly appreciated

just tell them its an AE92 motor, not an import motor.

there are quite a few differences to the early bigport 3rib motor.

i'd recommend spending a few extra $$ to get the geniune Toyota full seal kit.
That way you'll get the awesome metal gaskets, and the high quality Toyota HG.

DEFINITELY worth the extra few bucks.

Big end bearing are different IIRC, and there are many other differences on top of that as well. I would do like Jono suggests - just tell people you are rebuilding an AE92 SX corolla motor.

BTW - why did you import a smallport when they are so common in australia?
    ...... butt scratcher?!

    hey guys,
i was told by a dude at sprint auto parts that all smallports are import. i didnt argue.
Ive been quoted $260 for VRS and gasket by AJPS. what do you imagine the genuine toyota kit would be worth?

And im hoping my bores are in good nick and havnt been modified so the original spec rings go in nicely

BTW - what are the 'ribs' and how is my 7-rib differnt to a 3-rib?

3 rib are the early bigport model found in early ae82 corollas and mr2, then the bigport was upgraded to the 7 rib design in the later mr2 and ae82 corolla (87 - 88).

Then the smallport 7 rib block with oil squirters was released in the ae92/3 sx/gti in late 89

They are deff not an import engine and are extremly common in aus, with every SX corolla coming with the as standard

Hmmmm not sure what the conversion is... but most OEM gasket kits cost similar or less($260) in US dollars... not sure about your currency...

OEM gaskets seal so much better(in my opinion...)

In my current build, I had the block and head cut... so I could retain the stock gasket, while boosting compression above what a set of slugs provided.

The key gasket difference between large port and small port is the intake gasket... I believe all the others are the same...... except any that may be FWD exclusive..... so in that case you might have to get a few specific to your application. Since I've always built for rwd... I've always gotten the rwd gasket kit. Since I am also building a smallport, this time I got the rwd kit, and added a smallport intake to the lot.

^ yeh. i had the same when i did my ae82 smallport conversion but more so what i was implying is that they are not a engine that needs to be imported to be had..
