so apart from the shifter position, whats to stop you from putting a ae86 box in a ta22?

I don't quite understand the whole 20 and 22 spline thing.

    taken from Phill Bradshaws page

The T-50 gearbox was fitted to other engines as well, such as 1S and 3T etc. The gearbox itself is identical, however, the bell housings differ to suit the parent engine. There are also two types of T-50 gearbox, referred to as 20 and 22 spline. This relates to the number of splines on the gearbox output shaft. Both gearboxes have the same number of splines on the input shaft. There is also a difference in the diameter of the input shaft bearing, which is covered by the bell housing: 62 mm vs 68 mm. The 68 mm bearing is in the 22 spline gearbox. The 22 spline gearbox is more desirable as it is stronger. It is also what all RWD 4AGEs came with.

    So,

basically you could put a AE86 box into a ta22, but you would have to modify the tail shaft to suit the 22 spline?

    *confused*

    pretty much

I think you can use a AE86 tail shaft with little hassle, but I have never done anything like this before

I did sell a AE71 T50 with the driveshaft to a guy that was gonna put it into his TA22

Cheers mate. Interesting info, might look into an 86box later down the track.

Depends on engine. If you have a 4A in a TA22 then the matching 22 spline box and bellhousing will work (other than the gear lever position). If you have the original T series engine and bellhousing then you need a spacer to match up to the larger front bearing of the 22 spline box or it can leak. I have a factory T series 22 spline box so will try to check over the weekend and confirm the difference to the 20 spline bellhousing.
