Engine oil!

Hey everybody,

I had a quick search but couldn't find much on what engine oil people use, think is good/what to steer clear of etc etc.

I've got a fairly tired old 2T in my TA22 which I've been using Castrol GTX2 in (dad had quite a few containers full of it) since I've had the car, but said supply has now run out. I've heard it's good to stick with the same oil and not chop and change but yeah.

I guess what I'm really asking is what oil other people find is good to use in these old girls.

Castrol still do the GTX2 but have just given it a different name now I believe.

If it runs flat-rockers instead of rollers over the camshaft, pick an Oil with a high Zinc content.

As to what people recommend, that really depends on your budget and what the stores near you have available. Most oils in the $35/5L range are of reasonable performance.

shell helix is a good oil to use i reckon

and if u want to try and prevent wearing etc use STP treatment for old/new engines Does anyone use it here i have ( in my ta22 etc) and reckon its sweet?

a bloke was telling me using it causes the oil to be thicker and that can lead to issues in oil pressure this and can harm the motor but isnt STP an engine treament that protects the engine agianst any potential wear and can be used for both new and old cars.

oils shouldn't need treatment.. if they do, then you have chosen the wrong oil viscosity maybe

standard for the 2TG would have been 20W-50 for aussie temp ranges? = GTX3?
if it is getting a little smokey you could try 20W60...

does it burn the oil and cause it to go black quickly? (blowby etc).. ie, need to change it often anyway? or looking for something to leave in a bit longer?

i just put it for added protection so u reckon dont do that? the oil i put is graded 20w-50

In flogged out old engines i use HPR 50. It also has added zinc as per abently comments but is very thick!!!

= goo that makes oil thicker = just use 20W-60 for higher viscosity at runnign temps probably cheaper too

if you wan tthicker oil, just buy thicker grade.
if you really want the chemicls breaking down in your oil to give antifriction properties (zinc) then you can go that way, but they only protect IF your oil film breaks down, and even then the extra protection is marginal.. ie, is not going to stop lifters galling if they run out of oil (maybe for an extra 10 or 100 revolutions? no idea how much more)...


anyway back to original point.
if the engine is not consuming oil, then somethign with 40-50 weight at temp is ok. if it is using a bit of the thinner (40 weight) oil, then go a 50-60...
the winter rating is not such an issue in Aus, as the temps don't go that low, but if you want it to spin a little freer when it is not warm, then a thinner W is better.. ie, 15W, or 10W.

OC, re-check that "magazine" Oil test publication and tell me there was no relation between the Zinc content and the results.. lol

Anyway, I strongly advise everyone against making their own 'homebrew oil' by mixing in such things as STP treatment, Zinc or whatever idea pops up etc.

You can still find the perfect Oil for any particular Engine so there's no need for anyone to out smart themselves.

Penrite Oils are high in Zinc and have a wide range of viscosities to suit every old Engine and its particular mileage. Plus is cheap enough to do 3000K oil changes if you feel inclined.

GTX2 is still called GTX2, they've just tacked on a "modern engine" tag. GTX is what they now say for older engines (pre-1990) in a 20W-50.
