Alternator is on its way out.
hi all
i need some help i have just bought a 1992 lexus LS400 but there are a few dash lights that come on at operating temp
they are the oil level light, rear lamp light, coolant level and charge
all come on and go out at the same instant - some times flash sharply like a bad earth but usually on when warm
fluid levels are all good
any ideas

i second the Alternator....
check the charge rate should be at 14v, sounds like the brush's are just about worn out...

I had similar problems in my 94 LS400, dash would effectively 'warm up' but would flicker until it was 'warm'
it progressed to them not even working for ages until the car was 'warm' then they'd come on.
I had to call Neil Rush in QBN and get a new dash. (Rush Imports?)
In addition to the above posts, if the alternator is soaked in oil, make sure to fix the leak from the P/S pump before replacing it.
It is typically the oil that kills them.
There is a different issue on the 93-94 LS that caused all dash illumination to stop functioning. A component on the circuit board inside the meter fails. A shop close to the dealer I was at could do repairs on them. They kept the actual repaired part a secret though...Originally Posted by tomvale13
hi all, the alternator is charging at 14.3 volts when this problem is happening. there has been a p/s problem by the looks of it but it is clean at the moment. is it still possibly the alternator? thanks neil
Those 4 lights mean that the signal in the alt has been sent to the dash to turn them on.
Perhaps that signal is faulty?
Can you borrow an alternator to try?
