If it is a competition drift only car (ie not to be registered) then go crazy with it, get the trusty grinder and cut out the centre of the firewall and see how nicely you can get the 1JZ in there. Just make sure you are not in a hurry, and be prepared for the whole process to take about 5 times longer than you expect.You will however learn heaps along the way and have the satisfaction of a self built car. Though, even doing it all yourself it will probably cost more than you expect also.
Otherwise if it is to be registered then you need to ensure the legality of your mods long before you begin to attempt anything.

find out the weights of both engines, se where the centre of gravity of the engine will sit (in relation to the front tyre contact patch.
or maybe go for a drive in an S12 with an RB conversion, so you can see how fooly sik the handling is.. see if it is affected adversly...
but seriously... if it is for drift, what does it matter which engine you get? it will be thrashed and will break, and the car shold be sideways, so that negates any real notions of handling etc, it just comes down to your preference.

I'll probably register it due to not having a trailer and tow vehicle..but I'd only be driving it to and from the track..I'm expecting the whole build to take a long time due to funds..I know its going to have to be mod plated for being a 2 seater and the engine is going to need to be mod plated..not really sure what else..
Well in regards to the weight..can someone advise me of the weight of a 1J? As for why it matters what engine I get..A 1J is cheaper than an sr..stronger and easier to get more power from when I want to..Its just as important for a drift car to handle as well as it runs
And as for straightening the body its pretty f*cked in quite alot of places

I disagree that handling is not as important or that weight distribution is not critical in a drift car. Whether it is for fun or competition a correctly balanced car will provide a great deal more control, better handling and more speed during a drift. There is nothing worse in drifting than continually fighting a car that has natural understeering tendencies.Originally Posted by oldcorollas

As for drift cars breaking, that is not necessarily the case if they are built and tuned right, and the 1JZ is one of the strongest motors out there and provides a fantastic base for a drift car. The only broken 1J's are ones that have been incorrectly tuned, or which have had a failed aftermarket component (like a faulty wastegate).![]()
Looks like there may be problems with the rear turbo and or piping fouling the brake booster. Might have to convert to single straight up or go VVTi version.
Food for thought the gazelle also came with the FJ20, and VG30 motors outside of oz, now whilst a VG30 isn't hugley long it sure as hell is wide and pretty heavy. I can't see why a 1jz couldn't be done but your moving more wieght further forward and hence going to create mroe understeer.
If its for dorifto just stick a CA18DET or SR20DET in there, or if you feel adventuress and have a bit more funds go the old school FJ20, my mates just rebuilding his for his gazelle and is aiming to get the fastest S12 in the world, currently held by one with around 400-450rwhp, his build is seeing 38psi with an aim for 500rwhp, oh and he drifts it too.

maybe ask there and see if anyone has thought about it (then binned the idea) or attempted it before.
Oh and whilst it may be cheaper to buy a 1jz, you'll find the custom parts required for the conversion will more than add to to substantially more than an SR20DET conversion even after modding the sr with light tweaks for a similar power output

I've thought about the FJ as well..but engine is a way off and I'm really just wanting to gain a bit more knowledge on what would need to be done..sounds like your friends s12 is going to be a serious monster..So is having a 1J in there definately going to create more understeer due to pushing weight further forward? And would there be a way around this understeer in drifting?

Since when is handling not a vital component of a drift car? I think that if youre initiating a slide at 160+ km/h then you would want the car to be stable and handle well or you could very well find your way into a wall...if handling wasnt an issue with drift why wouldnt we all just go and slap Supercharged 308's in all of our cars? after all thats some cheap and easy power isnt it...
If I were to go into a drag racing thread and sprout things like "rear grip is less than essential for drag racing" or "drag racing is crap" then I would be neg repped, tell me why I shouldnt neg rep you for constantly knocking on a sport that many of us regard as our favourite...
Now, that said...this thread is a waste of time, robski go and look at a 1JZ and take a measuring tape with you...go for the SR20, it will be much easier and a lot easier to keep road legal even if its no where near as good as the 1JZ...you want to 1JZ something then youre gonna have to go with a bigger car..such as a silvia at least
