Sell or swap the whole rear axle setup to one of the drag racing dudes.

Sounds a good idea but what sort of diff can I replace it with? I would eventually like to put a jzx100 v.v.t. or a 2jz with an R154 soarer box so Ideally I would like an independent rear end with disc brakes but I think this would be too much of a mission to swap over!!.
    Any help would be great.

I would assume from any x8 series car, mx83, gx81 etc etc

I think you'll find the IRS will not bolt up to the solid axle rear end as the floor pans will differ.

    What size diff is it now? G, F, S or T ?
If its G or F just leave it as is.
If its S or T you'll need to replace with with something stronger, most likely a 2WD Hilux G series diff. Will also most likely be a custom job.

Thanks CrUZida, i knew there were issues but didnt know what exactly.

You mention you want a VVTi or 2JZ swap later, what engine has it got in now because if its still the standard one (not sure what the SX got, i know the LX is diesel, GX/JZX are obvious) then i would not waste the time changing the rear end.

You guys can buy and register a genuine JZX81 so i would start with that base. At least you will have a 1JZ to start with, along with IRS, bigger brakes and some are already manual. And if you still want to change the engine, you can sell the std 1JZ for some decent money.

SX will be an "S" engine.

    Either 2S-C or 3S-FE

Most likely a povo-spec car with T-series rear end (like the LX's)

I think (from last one I looked under the bonnet of) they run the 4S-FE, although that may have been a SX83 and it had a disc brake live axle (5 stud and E series from memory). As has been said though, in NZ you are far better to spend the money on a better base car than try to upgrade it when the factory has already done the hard work for you.
