LPG/Air substitution for Oxy/Acetylene

OK,

First off I'm note really sure on the proper description of what I'm after, perhaps someone can help me out there...

Anyway I'm looking for info in how to set myself up with a torch so that I can run a flame off an LPG bottle...

I'd be intending to use it to heat metal in order to bend it, i.e. gearbox shifters

Don't see why it wouldnt work, should give out enough heat to bend shifters
Worst case might just need an extra shove with a big hammer to do so

Last I checked LPG wasnt too far off the energy of acetylene

Acetylene roughly 50MJ/kg
LPG ~ 46MJ/kg

Someone correct me if I'm way off the mark

Yep, know it can be done.

One of my mates dads has an LPG/Air set, and I've gotten help off him in the past to bend a shifter no dramas

Will hit him up for more info next I talk to him...

LPG plus oxygen is definitely hot enough....

yeh,

this is the setup i use.

cuts anything and heats fine.

you cant weld with it as easy as acety.

bonus of this setup is you can use BBQ LPG bottles.

fwiw: Mick's dad uses LPG instead of Oxy - he uses O2 not plain air so he can braze/weld/cut.

i know the telstra techs used LPG cylinders with a special torch for melting heat shrink. not sure what sort of torch/burner it is though...

LPG/Oxy combo is used here at onesteel for flame cutting purposes all the time.

one safety warning though; LPG is heavier than air and hence will sit in the bottom of cellars, inspection pits etc. if there is a leak.
Probably not that much of an issue for home use but always good to keep in mind.

Also need to make sure you get proper regulators, hoses and fittings for LPG.

i sell them at work, and the hoses have a much higher pressure rating than acetylene.

up to 3 times higher or more... from memory i could be wrong, but it is higher.

Yeah, what's the go with flash back arrestors ... I've been told I should really have one on my oxy (which I dont)

I don't like the idea of an acetylene bottle exploding anywhere near me :-)

if you get a fire or burnback in the torch it stops it going back to the bottle, you should have 2 at the end of your torch, one for oxy and the other acet, or whatever your using, and one for each gauge, and they are two different types for the gauge and the torch, for example you cant put the the arresters from the guage onto the end of your torch and vise versa
