Default Turbo Charade ( I know not toyota!! )

Hi everyone I know this is a toyota forum but it seems everyone here knows what they are talkin about and noone will answer me anywhere else!

Andyway the car is a g11r charade turbo 1986. Now its seems to be running rich like blows a bit of black whether on boost or not, also as it comes on boost it surges and splutters but if I sorta play around wiht the throttle it will come good and go quite well all the way to redline.

The previous owner says he has had the carby rebuilt because of this problem and the mechanic told him if it still doesn it then it is the secondaries?? What excatually does he mean by that? Apart form that the motor seems to run quite well and always starts easily. So anyway if anyone would have a clue what is goin on with my motor or knows if there is any online diagrams for rebuilding carbys and vacum lines and that sorta thing it would be greatly appreciate ,

    Thanks Guys

to start, have a look at the manual for your car.

if you don't have one, get one

there are carby diagrams on a US site, but i can't remember which it was, and they faxed me a copy of a hard to find carby for free.. nice guys..

second thing for you to do is to see what make and model the carby is, and then search online for it. a bit of searching (esp in the manual for your car) will go a long way

    good luck!

Thanks for the reply mate ,

I dont actually ahve a manual for the car they seem to be hard to come by...
I know its an Aisin carby but thats about it. Would you know any good sites with information on Aisin carby`s?? I have tried searching but with not much luck. Also do u think you would be able to explain what the secondaries are on an carby and how they work, this is all new to me as you can probably tell....
    Thanks again for your help!

o,ok, nah there is no oil in the intake and it doesnt blow any smoke and the turbo has hardly any shaft play. I am pretty sure the turbo is in good nick because if i play with the throttle a bit while comming on boost it will sort of kick and splutter and then come good and perform really well. it deffinetly seems to be running rich i thought maybe the fuel pressure regualtor is faulty and letting to muhc fuel thorugh? What do u think,

    Thaks for the reply

There shouldn't be a fuel pressure regulator if its a carby... so don't get conned into paying money for that.

The secondaries are a second set of throttle bodies and jets in the carby which open at top end to allow more air and fuel mixture to enter the engine.

The primaries open in the lower part of the rev range whilst the secondaries stay shut. This causes the air to travel faster through the carby helping to mix the air and fuel.
Once the engine is revving harder, more air and fuel is required so the secondaries open up.

The mechanic might be saying that the secondaries are a bit sticky and may be stayin open a little which would cause the primaries to not function properly (ie the air speed might not be quick enough to thoroughly mix with the fuel)

By the way I used to own one of these turbo charades. It was a good little car.

Pull the carby off and clean it out with some carby cleaner, check your fuel pump (I guess it'd be a mechanical one), if this has only just started happening, check that there's not any water in the fuel. It sounds like a) you're getting too much fuel, or b) the fuel isn't atomising enough, in which case you'll probably need a carby rebuild kit (shouldn't be expensive).
