Default The basement budget 4AG Rebuild

After easter I am planning my first budget/backyard rebuild of a 4age.
My base engine is a running but clapped out, smoky and leaky 7 rib bigport with 280k on it
Not planning to do up the motor, just get it a bit fresher and not leaky.
I'll only be playing with the bottom end while sending the head to a mate
So i wil be doing bearings, rings, gaskets.
Wondering if anyone can help me with the following so I can get an idea of possible 'Suprise' costs.

    1. Likelyhood of needing block machining.
    2. Likelyhood of needing crank machining.
    3. Best thing to do about the oil pump.
    4. Any other important gaskets that I should get.
    5. Any other helpful tips.

    Cheers

You would definitely want the block honed. also quite likely it won't fall into factory specs aswell so it would then need to be bored aswell. if you take it to an engine shop they can measure it all up for you aswell to see if it comes into specs. sorry i can' help you on the other things tho

definitely budget in oversize pistons, and a matching bore and hone of the block.

definitely consider getting the crank big ends ground undersize if the journals are scored.

the mains should be ok IF the oil has always been kept clean, so you might get away with not grinding the main journals undersize.. check with a stock bearing for clearance if you are concerned.

oil pump, check clearances and condition. if ok, re-use, but if any damage evident, get new one. they are not that expensive (but maybe not "budget" )

change ALL gaskets. no point re-using them.
also change ALL O-RINGS, esp water pump dizzy etc.. they will be fecked. you could get Viton ones instead of nitrile.. more exxy, but better heat resistance. (or silicon ones.. ask at your favourite bearing shop)

be busget, but replace anything that looks fecked, it will save you heartache (and back ache) later if you do it now.

I was hoping to just give it a re-hone and get away with that.
But all will reveal when I open it.
thanks oldcorollas for the good advice +rep

I think it is a bit of a waste of time if you don't do it properly seeing as you have the engine completely stripped and at the machine shop. Speak to a GOOD engine shop and they will tell you what you need and what you could get to make sure your engine will last longer and runs better
