since the lights of death came on, did you check what voltage was at the battery when the engine is running? normaly when those lights come on it means the alt is dead or on it's way out.
hi i have a weird problem my battery died the other day in the old mr2 i charged it again since it was only bout 6 months old and after that it held a good 13.4 volts at the terminal. now this is when the problem started i put the battery back into the car started up fine i drove bout 40 metres when the cooling fan and the battery charge light came on in the car. I cant find out any reason y this is coming on anyone got any ideas? the car isn't overheating and the battery is holding its charge for instance didnt drive it for bout 3 hours and it started up fine. oh and some of the water out of the battery seams to have leaked out of the fill holes if that helps?

shit thats crap. nah i havent checked it at the battery but the standard volt meter in the car is up on 18 volts when im driving when its just sitting there its on bout 13 at idle
ok i through a meter on the battery today when the car was running and it was only 12.34 which means the alt must be dead right? if that is the reason how come the cooling fan light came on as well?
from memory when rectifier in alt dies in aw11 the cooling fan light will come on.
yep it was the alt the rotor was pretty much rooted anyone know where to get a cheap one since the bastards are wanting to charge me 400 for it fixed or new and they aren't even fitting it in the car for me
NA? I have one....

thanks but i ended up picking up a 130amp one for 200 bucks delivered to me so that should work fine.
aftermarket i gather? if it's a bosch you'll need to space it correctly, find a pulley (i used one from a *cough* comodore) and wire it up so it will work the idiot light.
for future reference, if you pull the positive lead off of the battery while the engine is running it should continue to do so. if the condition of the engine changes (ignition probs or it dies) then your alternator is busted.
