I was in a head shop the other day and they use this gear called Cold Dip (thats what was written on the drum) they just leave all the gear in a pan overnight and its good as new in the morning.

gotta watch some of those industrial dips with alloy especially the hot ones. put some pistons and alloy covers (off a holden 6) in one over night and only had the rods left in the morning the alloy was just a shiny scum floating on the top

you could also try spraying some throttle body cleaner onto the top of the pistons(since the heads off) and using a rag to wipe it up. it cleans carbon out of throttle bodies pretty well, dont see why it wouldnt work with pistons.

i have black shit on my pistons too. engine still runs. blows no smoke. meh.
i saw it with one of them fiber optic thingos. then i proceeded to stick it up my nose to see what was up there

I've had one of those up my nose (looking at a throat problem, heart burn etc), not pleasant at all! Specially when it forces past the bulb in the nose (way up in there)... makes me shudder thinkin about it !
