why wouldnt you run the complete 1mz setup electronic throttle and all ? that will save you from having to go aftermarket ecu, you'll be able to run it all off the 1mz ecu, meaning it should pass enigneering everything no worries.
ok so it's been a while since i posted in here and i am at a point where i am ready to go ahead with a 1mz-fe conversion into my st184 celica,
ripping out the 5sfe will be an awesome feeling as this one is just about to give up the ghost and i've cut my losses and am refusing to do any more to it just to keep it running as it seems to be a bottomless pit...........
firstly this will be done within the next month or two.......
engine is sourced, shop is sourced to do the making of custom parts,
i will try to keep you all informed of progress if ya all are interested............
research so far indicates...................
1- stock 184 gearbox bolts up, only change will be a modified/custom dust/inspection plate....
2- will need front timing cover side engine mount custom made...
3- the 1mz-fe does not have a return fuel rail so i will be using a 3vz-fe fuel rail..
4- i will also be using the 3vz-fe intake/throttle body as it is mechanical instead of the 1mz-fe's electronic throttle body....
5- new centre bearing mount for cv..
6- ecu i will let the shop deal with that.
7- upgraded fuel pump
8- headers and exhaust system
So far i just intend to do a stock for stock conversion effectively doubling current power output........73kw to 143kw, future plans will include either turbo or supercharger, still usure at this stage, but right now thats not important....
if anyone has any suggestions or maybe something that i have overlooked please let me know......
my reasoning for this conversion is that i get more power, stay legal, still fuel efficient, and alot more fun to drive, and it's a somewhat out of the ordinary conversion for a celica,

For the other of these conversions I've seen, you don't need to remake the timing cover plate.
There should already be a stabiliser mount there, but you need to make up custom parts to fit your engine mount up to the block.
This is a popular swap with the SW20 guys in the US (though they are starting with a 3S), so do a search for that.
You can use the driveshaft mount off the 1MZ, but it doesn't line up by about 3mm or something on the shaft itself. I think you can simply get a machine shop to redo the groove. I'm not 100% sure on this as I've never had a Toyota with that type of shaft.
thanks guys the more research i do the more i start to lean across to the 3vz-fe... which is more then likely the way i will go as i believe the swap will be somewhat better...and for future upgrades.......as most of the parts that need to be changed on the 1mz would have come from the 3vz anyway so i to me this sounds like a better option this way it will all bolt in and work......without too much drama.....( fingers crossed)
