Default jza80 supra front susp A-arm ball joint...

the front ball joint off the top susp A arm seems to be press fit/integrated into the arm casting. the toyo EPC states it is one entire replacable unit and doesnt define the ball joint itself as a single part...

... which is unlucky for us folks wanting to make their own susp members

does anyone know what the balljoint pin dia/taper/length is? or whether any of the 100's of aftermarket balljoints available individually would be compatible with the upright? is there a degree of consistency with toyota's ball joints accross models? failing all of that, does anyone have a spare jza80 A-arm i could borrow (save me disassembling a wreck or my own car in the meantime) ?

see pic below - the A-arm and balljoint are a single unit

Not much help, other than to ask if you have seen these?

this is the kind of generic aftermarket balljoint im hoping to find compatible (this is the lower ball joint off an echo for example)

wilbo - ive seen those, but me no likey. probably would be ok, but id prefer not to have that method of adjustment, and you dont know the quality of those joints/materials/welds etc etc. prefer to design/fabricate it myself, even if its at greater expense (those are cheap!)

    cheers

Any reason you don't like the type that 'bolt in' as opposed to press in?

    e.g. this style...

    either, bolt/press/weld whatever...
im happy to use/design around what fits and whats available

the critical thing is that the shaft's dia/taper/length etc suits the supra's upright

You could fairly easily just rheem out the uprights to fit whatever taper you need.

Doesn't really answer your qestion but it's an option.

other option would be a heim joint with a monoball pin...

    again, need length/dia/taper though

Ed maybe wilbo666's examples were not great, but there plenty of other a/market suspension components around

    Ikeya Formula for one

Wheel not round enough for ya?

    Needs re-inventing?

Just out of interest what is wrong with the aftermarket solutions / what are they lacking?

    Cheers

the cheapie ones, are, well cheap. too cheap almost, makes you wonder about the joints quality as well as basic materials and manufacturing quality

the ikeya ones are bloody expensive, and get a good wrap, so safe to assume theyre probably ok, but expensive none the less. i dont kow of any others

build it yourself, know the materials, design and fabrication process yourself, mid price point, plus get to dictate your own degree of angular adjustment...

eg - we plan to make two types, one fixed at an increase of 2deg camber and 2deg castor over oem (these will be mine) and a second set (tan's) and these will be adjustable at the x-member mount end rather than the upright, giving multi plane (camber/castor) adjustability
