    Default Removing A/C Compressor

    Hello,

I need to remove my a/c compressor as it is seized, is there any risk in doing this as there may be gas in there, so what precautions should I take and is there any procedure I need to carry out to depressurize the system?

    Thanks.

Generally refridgerant gases are not too nice for the environment (especially the older types) and therefore there are regulations in place dictating that you are not allow to discharge them directly to atmosphere. The proper thing to do would be to go to a car aircon place and have them discharge the system for you. Not sure what it costs but is the right thing to do.
After the system is discharged its basically undoing nuts and bolts (and hose connections). Just be aware that there could still be a little oil in the system that drains out when you disconnect the hoses.

a mate of mine is doing the same thing with his ae82. he's getting someone out to do it at his house, as his car is stripped of all panels. $65 to get the a/c bloke out and de-gas it properly.

    I thought so,

I was wondering how its done. Have not had a look on the 1g's air con compressor, but on my pulsars there are 2 knobs on the air con compressor, what are those for?

    Thanks.

Well you'll probably find those 2 "knob" things are just caps for the drain/fill valves. If you unscrew them there should be a Schrader type valve, that's where they attach the machine to drain the system.

It should be safe for you just to give the center a quick push down for a second just to determine if there is actually gas in the system. If there is it'll come out under huge pressure, if its empty it may just hiss a little.

If there is still gas in it, please pay somebody to come out and drain it for you, its REALLY bad for the environment.

Like dfunkt said, the last one I had done, they came to my house and charged $60.

    Thanks,

I was just wondering if there was a environmentally friendly way for me to do it myself, but $60 is not a lot to pay so might as well.

Make sure you replace the seals on the pipes that you disconnect.
I've paid around $5 for all the seals in an A/C sytem before, so probably even a good idea to go through the whole thing & replace them while the system is gasless.
Make sure you look inside the box under the dashboard. These often get forgotten

May as well replace the receiver/dryer as well. These are only supposed to last aorund 3-4 years tops & again are prob only around $15.
