as long as the oil filter seals on you can use whatever oil filter you want to...
I haven't come across anything listing oil filter interchangability.
I just bought an oil filter for my 20v, from the local official Toyota authorised parts center.
They supply the "Drivejoy" brand.
On the box there is a fairly complete interchange list that applies to this filter.
Perhaps we could provide DOCUMENTED reliable source interchange lists for filters that fit Toyota models.
Please note, as indicated, this filter applies to 1990 m/y up 3SGTE.
DO NOT USE THIS FILTER ON A 3SGTE as fitted to an ST165.
If desired, the images can be translated.
Please only post documented and verifiable interchange lists for oil filters.

absolutely wrong!as long as the oil filter seals on you can use whatever oil filter you want to...
oil filters are slightly more complicaded than than, there are (at least) two other things to
consider.
pressure relief valve
anti drain back valve.
for example, i was looking at a mate's 2 dollar SR20DET filter and it had an integral pressure relief valve, wheras my 4AGE filter doesn't have one, as the overpressure valve is in the block.
Whenever you go to your local Supercheap Auto or repco look it up in the books on display. Depending on the brand of the book (for example Ryco) they'll have a cross reference chart that explains which oil filter in another brand (for example Valvaline) that will fit the same engine.
What is your Toyota Authorised parts dealer doing selling you non Toyota parts?
and size... some filters just don't fit

Oil filters are one thing that you should never skimp on, and you should never try to interchange between part numbers. Use the part number designated for your car, and for a whole $10, get a genuine filter. Never forget seeing a 2nd hand oil filter for sale at Cash Converters for $5. That made my day.

10 bucks? try 17 plus GST (for 4age that is)

Sorry, I'm used to trade prices But yeah, for something that stops your engine eating itself alive, they're cheap. Also, use good oils. It's like $15 pod filters...is it really worth trusting 2k worth of engine to a chinese filter?

Exactly right...
Everyone spends big on the car and doing it up, why skimp out on a $20 filter when it could save you thousands???
Ben...
It is a "Toyota" part:Originally Posted by Joshstix

Check where the capital for the company came from.
So what happens when you get a relocation kit and change it to another more common and cheaper filter?

Good question. I guess you'd have to make sure you bought a top-line oil filter with an anit-drain back valve, but also that your relocation kit had the pressure releif valve built into it. Interesting point...
