    thechuckster,
may i know what setup do you use? and what engine?
how much spark advance do you run at idling and at what RPM is your idling at?

my engine is 18R (steel head, non-crossflow) with ex-RB20 turbo (T3 I think) and 4AGZE injectors (365 cc/min). ECU is running MsExtra HiRes code (sorry, can't remember which version). Some more info is in the link in my Sig.

I tro to have it idle at or above 850rpm to keep oil pressure up and air-flow into motor fairly fast - the injector placement is not good at all and this makes for poor response when not on boost or at low rpms.

At idle, it can run >20 degrees advance at idle.

These maps are from the Dubbo drive back in 2007 so have been improved a bit since.

    Spark:

AFR target map (needs WB sensor to be used):

Accel (was still not good at low rpm/off boost):

seems like you have lots of ignition advance at idle. can u maintain the AFR at 15.5 when you idling with >20 ignition timing? i've experienced once when i was using stock toyota ignitor and running a locked ignition timing at 24 BTDC the engine just won't idle with AFR below 13. that cause my spark plugs wet and miss fire badly after few mins of idling. that was long time ago when i only run my MS2 with fuel only setup.
now i'm running both fuel and ignition so i'll try it out again.

this may not help but on my 3t carby with 470 valve lift i had to bump the idle up and i ran static advance as 25deg.

can i also ask what setup you are useing for ignition? elec dizzy or coil packs?

    cheers, dan

i'm using distributor 4 tooths VR-Signal pick up and sparks are distributed by the distributor. i ran direct coil control from MS2 V3. as i mentioned, everything was silky smooth b4 i change to my current setup. i'll post up my VE table for both fuel and ignition once i got home.

not quite sure - was done many years ago at Ivan Tighe Cams in Brisbane and organised by my engine builder. All he said was that it "suited to turbo" with a more lift and shorter overlap - no info about duration, sorry,

    ok here is update
able to fired up the engine immediately after i upgrade to 60mm throttle body and after couple of idle tuning on Fuel VE and adjusting the idle screw i've been able to get the engine idle "smoothly" with 12* BTDC ignition timing. looking forward to street tune it this coming sunday. will start with a conservative timing to get the AFR right before starting to advance the timing a little bit..
