Did you do it properly with a timing light and jumping terminals E1 and TE1??
Hey guys, I’m just having some trouble with the ignition timing on my 7m. I have removed the dizzy while fixing some oil and water leaks. So since I have installed it and found TDC, I then set it to 10.
When I drove to work this morning on the f3 I noticed the car to be a bit sluggish going up the hills but not consistently. I have been talking to one of the mechanics at work and he said to advance the timing more if the engine has low compression. I haven’t tested it yet but I guess it would be pretty low as I can turn the motor over with the sparkplugs in.
Has anyone had any problems with this or could the problem be something different like leads or plugs.

Yea I used a timing light and jumped the terminals. I am staring to think that it might be the leads or something and just a coincidence that it happened at the same time. I can feel the car shaking slightly when this happens so maybe its the knock sensor.

i'd say its probably leads.. maybe a bad connection or they might have even gotten damaged when you removed them. just check the rotor button, dizzy cap and leads. when you say it's 'shaking', it's misfiring. i wouldn't just go and advance it on a hunch like that since it's set to where it's supposed to be already.
Your right about it misfiring it must have just been a coincidence that it happened at the same time I am going to change the coil lead and the plugs this weekend, thanks for that![]()
Check the resistance of the leads before changing them as they may not be the problem & could save you some money.
Check the dizzy carefully as you may have a hairline crack in it.
10 degree timing is good & there is no advantage in advancing/retarding it.
Stock comp. on these engines is 9.2:1.
