There is only one seal that will come close to fitting.
The other seal is the R154 seal which is mucho larger.
Hey all,
So i got another gearbox to replace my current one and the rear main seal was buggered on the replacement and leaked everywhere so i replaced that yesterday with a new one from toyota and its still leaking........![]()
I checked the tail shaft for any thing that might damage the seal but looked fine and it didnt damage the old seal in the other box i didnt damage the seal when i put it in and put oil around it before i inserted the shaft.
The only other thing i could think of is if i over filled it but i put 2.4 litres in (which it says in the manual) all i had was a 2.5 litre bottle so even if i accidently put it all in i dont think it would of mattered too much but i made sure i left a bit in the bottom.
The shaft in the back of the box doesnt have any play either.
Maybe the seal is wrong??? its fits perfectly but might not be sealing around the tailshaft? this is the part # that i got from toyota "9031140001" i dont know its history of the gearbox i got other than it was also hooked upto a 1g, soarer or supra i dunno but the shifter location is a couple of mm back from the one i had picked up from importbitz originally.
Any ideas?
thanks!

i spoke to toyota spares they said they have another seal that has a different Internal diametre to suit the same box so that must be it i hope.
Just to add to this aswell
I swapped the speed sensor from my original auto last night because the current one is reading 10-20kmh faster and its still the same lol is there more too it than just the sensor?

The sensor just converts the mechnical motion into electrical signal.
You need to change the cog that drives the sensor.

did you try to slide the seal onto the tailshaft before fitting the seal into the box?

sorry to hijack thread but i have a different gearbox but the same problem.
i bought the seal from non toyota place. put it in, and it still leaked. just bought the toyota one and it's still leaking. it only seems to happen at more higher speeds 80 - 100k's then just putting around at 60.
i think it could be something in the way i'm putting it on. as it needs a fair amount of force to get the seal in there and i think its bending the seal before it gets all the way in. though i'm not 100% sure.
As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are
I find the best tool for installing seals are sockets.

maybe you are pushing it too far in?

no i didnt try it over the tailshaft first i should of.....
i have "90311 38032" seal now which has a smaller ID so hopefully that will solve my issue
i used a rubber mallet to tap mine in gently around the edges and that seemed to work fine

check it on the tailshaft before putting it in
should be tightish sliding fit with oil..
check the old one as well if you can get it out...
better yet, measure outside diameter of the shaft, and see if there are sizes on the seal (or at least a model number) for both new and old.. and see what fits where..

the problem with putting mine in is that it sits in about 15mm because it has a bit of felt and a metal ring that sits over it.
As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are
My original one had that felt, but any one I've bought since then hasn't had it.
I don't even know why its there.

The felt is there for a buffer to help keep dirt away from the seal. Mercedes uses these type seals on there truck motors for the front timing cover seal.
Also got to make sure there is no wear goove in the shaft where the seal runs. Is there a breather in the gear box could it be blocked.
Cheers
Alex
There is no breather on a w58 box.
More than likely a groove worn in the shaft of the wrong ID on the seal
If it aint FAST it aint FUN
