it will be fine
Hey guys
Can anyone forsee a problem using one of these boxes behind a later model xAxx engine in a little KE10 cruiser (remember: cruiser, not something to be caned)? I figure that anyone on here who has one of these would prettymuch throw it away and I could have it for free/beer.
As I understand it, the main killer of gearboxes (aside from abuse) is the torque-to-weight ratio.
Did some looking and the AE71 is 955kg and has 127Nm from the 4AC. A KE10 is allegedly 710kg so being realistic maybe 760kg when converted to the bigger engine/box/brakes. That still leaves a 200kg differential which is ~27% lighter, which realistically means that the car could have say 25% more torque and the box would still be operating within its standard design principles.
Which means somewhere around 160Nm should be OK as long as the box is not abused. This being the case, I'm thinking that any of the 4AGE variants (max 140Nm) or a 7AFE (155Nm) would be fine with one of these boxes.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

kickdown cable would need sorting out for proper shifting, check to see if reverse light switch is wired the same, and you would probably need to wire it so starter motor doesn't work unless it is in park in order to make it legal.
Otherwise it's a basic auto gearbox - as long as ECU of your engine is ok with it, just bolt on and cruise...

Depending on cost/availability I will probably use a FWD 4AFE, I can't see the ECU having a problem - I might even use a 4AFC depending on what's available locally as either is a huge power increase. Most people would be happy for me to get it out of their driveway and save them hiring a ute/trailer to junk it...
Factory KE10 52hp / 68Nm
4AFC 90hp / 135Nm - 73% increase in power and 98% increase in torque
4AFE 104hp / 140Nm 100% increase in power and 105% increase in torque

won't that cause problems with the whole FWD/RWD thing?
Thanks for pointing it out, but I thought it went without saying.
Would need to do the standard changes with water galleries etc to get it into RWD layout but from what I've read it seems pretty straightforward.

Awesome idea, but good luck getting the dizzy to fit
Unless you are gonna chop a hole in the firewall, then i'll shut up
Go a 4age 16v, the dizzy is on the side
The spanner in my avatar is actually a 16mm, that's why it's still new

The one thing you'll need to get is a flex plate off a 20v because I don't think any 16v 4AGE's ever came in auto, and the 4AC is a 6 bolter rather than 8.
If you want to spend a bit of money and do some searching, there are 4 speed auto boxes too. They are not common at all though, there are none on any Australian car. From memory they are on the auto AE86's in japan (very uncommon car) and also on some of the AE86's in the US.
I want to do your engine conversion wiring for you, PM me.
if this box is going behind a 20v you will need a different starter motor plate and starter as the auto box has the starter bolted onto the passenger side not the drivers side when 20v is in rwd format. this was somethign I missed. my engine and box is going into a suzuki sierra setting up for a little bit of comp winch challenge work and mostly fun.
And yes 20v 6 bolt flex plate is needed....

my 4age ae92 100kw motor is AUTO
i'm using the 4AFC auto - works fine.
i used a 20v flexplate - no problems - fitted perfectly.
Something that "might" work, look into wether the A40D 4speed box (RT142, RA65) will mate up to the A40 3speed bellhousing. I got the bellhouse but not the box, decided to go W58 in the KE10 instead.

Why not go the 7afe or more so 7age [4age rwd head]? Then use the 4ac auto 6bolt flex plate?
Im assuming here that the 4ac auto bolts to a 7afe but it "should".
The ke10 will move along quite nicely too, probably get good economy too.
Well yeah that's the idea, goes ok, kinda cool and good economy.
I mentioned the 7AFE in my original post but I'm not sure about any extra weight or the dimensions causing issues.
20V looks like a headache with the dizzy, 4AGZE looks better but I didn't want to go forced induction... I also have other project ideas on the go, just trying to make that difficult decision as to which one to commit to.
