I did this in my old 21R powered Corona:
#1
The coil came from a Tercel i found at a pick-a-part, and the ignition module i bought from somewhere (a Bosch something... cant remember the part #).
It worked very well.
Hi all,
my current set is pictured below (from a 21R in 18R body) with original nippon coil. Need to
know what suitable aftermarket coils are out there. Several places I've been to, haven't had
anything in stock or have anything equivalent listed (kept getting pointed to GT40R, useless)
for electronic ignition. Any thoughts?
Cheers.

Ill take a guess at a BIM024 for that module.

Hey dood, I've done a similar thing in the past. As Takai said the module is a BIM024 and you can use a Bosch HEC716 coil (its a transformer type coil), there is a wiring diagram available here http://www.toymods.net/forums/showth...422#post703422 (This is basically the same system used in the early commodores with electronic ignition).

...... butt scratcher?!
GT40R coils are for the points type ignition with the ballast resistor.Originally Posted by CrUZida

I remember bosch doing a solid epoxy coil once, dont know if that'd be any good, that was
one i used on my commy years ago.
thanks for the reply's will look up HEC716 and wiring in a jiffy.

while searching for Bosch MEC 718 i found this pdf ....

Using that PDF.... takai was correct, i had a BIM 24.
See if you can get one, super simple to wire up and works very well.
Youll be able to use it with any newer transformer style coil (no ballast).

thanks people, muchly appreciated
looks like i'm changing over to bim024 with a transformer coil ..

Reviving an old thread!
I'm running a BIM024 on an 18RGU factory electronic ignition dizzy. The coil I've been using is the old 1975 vintage Nippondenso points coil and ballast resistor. The engine idles fine but backfires at anything more than 1/4 throttle. Is it likely I have fried the ignotor or coil by using the wrong coil?

try the set up mwp mentioned that works well.
there may a fried module there or the coil is so old its lagging heaps
check your ig timing, firing sequence, vac and mech advance and plug gaps
as well.
cheers
Brett, first try running it without the Ballast.
After that try a newer transformer style coil.
