tappets mate, noisy tappets. T series engine trait ;-)
Soot out the rear is running rich, what managment is it running and is it tuned properly?
I have just finished changing the oil in my 3T-GTE, and the engine is making a ticking noise.
when I drained the engine there was only 3ltre's of oil in it, and due to one or two oil leaks I decided to get a much thicker oil than normal, 25W70 fully synthetic,
the engine makes the ticking noise on idle and revs upto about 2-3k after that the engine is too loud to hear if it is still there or not,
I believe the engine is highly modified, was told that it has forged piston and rods, but the person who told me has lied to me about a few other things too.
also it's spitting out quite abit of soot out of the exaust

will having noisy tappets damage the motor quickly?
It has a haltech F10x ECU. I'm planing on getting it retuned within 2 months anyway when I get a new 2 1/2 inch exaust put on it. I'll be getting them to put an O2sensor hole in the dump pipe for the ECU, also needs a TPS.
25W70 !!!
Dude thats some really think oil. Rather than dodge it up, fix the F#cking oil leak and use the right oil ! Personlly a good quality 20W50 would be my suggestion.

The 4tgte has noisy tappets, and its only done between 40-60 thousands k's from new. def a T series traight, dont stress about that.
Seconded....fix the leaks.

Er, they don't have tappets, unless you consider the buckets to be that. And they would only be noisy if your valve clearances are too big.
