Default 2nd hand ecu that has been on an engine that let go while being tunned.

    Hello all,

I have seen bit of a deal on a Wolf V4+ ecu, but it has a bit of a cloud over it in that it was on an engine that let go while the tuner was tuning it.

I know it is bit of a hard one to judge, but I was wondering what some other people would think whom have more experience in this area than myself.

I would be getting the tune done on my car by a different tuner that has a large about of Wolf ECU experience. If is was a problem with the ECU is it reasonable to expect that they should pick it up before it takes a 2nd victim?

I'm going to give them a call and speak to the directly about their thoughts as well.

    Cheers
    Ben

Ben, just becasue someone calls themselves a tuner. doesnt mean they know what there doing..
Engines dont always let go for a reason, alot of our cars have very well built, top dollar engine programs, and occationaly one throws a rod throught the side of a block for no real reason. the ECU should be able to be checked out by wolf to confirm its operation.. there could have been somthing mechanically wrong with his engine to belong with.

This would be similar to buying a calculator that someone is selling becuase it gave the wrong answer.

More than likely the issue will lie in the setup (so many variables and possible issues that could lunch an engine) or the tuning inputs (again, so many possibilities).

The seller should be able to tell you exactly what went wrong to cause the engine issue, if not then see how much it is to have the ECU sent back to Wolf to have it bench tested and factor it into the purchase price

I would say the problem was in the tune, not the ecu.
Anyone can put a car on the dyno and start changing numbers, but not so many really know what they're doing.

A wipe of the old tune, verify the ecu is ok (just to be sure) and start from fresh with your new tune is what I would do.

HaHa this is so true. So many cowboys out there with no idea on what they are doing, he probably pulled it too hard to quick without doing it correctly, which is always going to cause problems.

ben perhaps find out the reason why the engine let go on the dyno. surely it was pulled down to diagnose.

as has been said ; alot of tuners call themselves that when, maybe they should be calling themselves tunas.

I'd definately get it checked by Wolf or someone in the know, then provided its ok install it and get it tuned.

Really like buying used timber from a house that fell down. While the timber could have been at fault, its more than likely the way it was used which resulted in the failure.

The question is: if you buy the ECU and it is stuffed, then what?

But gee, aren't they pretty sitting on your work desk. Just begging you to drift off to thoughts of cars, rather than doing the mundane task the boss pays you to do.

    cheers Chuck.
