just give the hornpad a tug once ive undone that bottom screw? it felt pretty tight when i gave it a try yesterday, didnt want to break the thing.

i think ill have to disconnect the horn for the neighbors benefit also.

Not 100% on the mx83 wheel but on the mx62 there is a little cressida badge in the middle part which comes out with a flat blade then there is a screw under that to remove the middle cover and then under that is the main nut that hold the wheel on.

dunno if that's any help but oh well.

There is only the one nut in the middle holding it. Loosen the nut completely, but don't take it off just yet.

Shake the wheel, jolt it up/down/left/right until it becomes loose. It's on the pretty tight but it will come off. Remember to leave the nut on the thread otherwise you'll smack yourself in the face.

Oh, and unplug the horn wire too!

yer its the middle cover/horn pad that i cant work out how to remove.

can anyone tell me if i need to pop the cressi badge out of the center a la what vinno said?

anyway thanks to all for the input, im having second thoughts about changing the wheel, might end up keeping the mighty stocko bus spec direction manipulator.

Don't pop the Cressida badge out. It isn't removable. Undo the screw at the bottom of the centre pad. Then get a firm grip of it at the split line with your fingertips and pull towards your face. If you've done it right it'll eventually let go and you'll smash your nose with it and be left sitting there feeling stupid.

The horn pad is held in place by little nylon ball and cup fittings. You just need to use a bit of force to pull the little balls out of the cups.

I exaggerated a bit... The horn pad is pretty lightweight and there's more than one little fitting so it doesn't really let go with a sudden bang. It's the steering wheel itself that's more likely to mash your face up.

When you go to take that off, if you're not using a steering wheel puller contraption make sure you leave the big nut a couple of turns on the steering column thread. You want to have it so the nut will be loose enough for you to pull at the wheel with all your strength but will stop the wheel flying back at you when it suddenly lets go.
