    Default Removing cam gear

I have stripped down my first engine to nothing but the head and block.
The cam is attached to the gear with a 24mm bolt. There's a chain holding it down so I can't get a socket in there.
The engine is a M-TEU out of a MZ10 soarer.
I have a 24mm spanner, which way should I be turning? How hard is it to get off?
    Thankyou in advance.

You should hold the crank pulley bolt with a large bar, or wedge it against something so the engine cannot turn. Then you should be able to rotate the cam pulley bolt in an ANTI-CLOCKWISE direction (undo) and the bolt should come off.

It might be pretty tight tho, might take some effort to get it off....

Thankyou for your reply, I put a screwdriver in through one of the holes and tried that, after a fair bit of pressure the screw driver snapped.
But it did flick out a piece of plastic which I didn't know could be removed. I can now fit a socket in there but even on my torque wrench both arms pulling I cannot budge it.

For some reason it no longer turns the engine either, the cam does not turn no matter how hard I try.
Is this because the engine is so old and years of it heating up and cooling down has just made the bolt ultra tight?
I can feel the torque wrench bending a little so I'm not too sure where to go from here.

Ok no problems I'll go back to the ratchet, bit smaller but I'll survive.
Should I throw on some wd40 or something?
Worse case scenario I suppose I could cut the chain somehow.

use the ratchet and slide a bar over the rachet handle making the leverage longer.
the only problem with this is that it may snap the nut.
You could try wd40 maybe every few hours soak it. maybe even for a couple of days.
Good luck mate, and watch out for you knukles.

Yeah I'd suggest some WD40 for a day or so, then get a big bar over the ratchet and kick it a few times. Sudden shock is much more likely to undo the bolt, if you just hang off the bar its likely to snap the bolt. (edit: or mangle your socket, snap your ratchet, bend the bar, etc)

    Woot thanks guys, it's off.
Now I can't see any visible bolts still holding the head down but it aint going nowhere. There are some huge allen key style circle pieces along the middle of the head perhaps these undo? If so I'm gunna need a mega allen key....

on my 1j the big ass allan key ones go nowhere.

they should be an allen key type (mine were 10mm) along each side of the head. Go to tool shop and ask for bihexagonal drive in whatever size you need as you will snap allan keys.

Yeah 10mm 8-sided bolts. Don't touch the 3 big hex things in the middle, apparently they have something to do with the structure or something.

query: why are you pulling apart an MTEU? or perhaps that should be put as 'why are you bothering pulling apart an MTEU?

Mteu has left hand thread on the cam bolt btw guys....so righty aint tighty, it's loosey

If you still can't get the head off check for some bolts at the front of the head in the timine chain cover.

    Cheers

In case u hadn't guessed I have no idea about taking apart an engine. the mteu is fairly simple and has a BHG. I'll look for some more bolts to pull out.
    Thanks

As Wilbo said the cam bolt on all sohc M series engines are left hand thread. For memory there are 3 internal bolts on the front of the head that bolt through to the timing cover.Plus you will need to take out the chain tensioner on the left hand side of the head(usually red).
    Cheers Brett.
