I was thinking more of the extra 2 driven wheels, which apparently, theoretically should give me more corner grip.
At least I've got half my drive coming at the right end of the car now

Not currently it don't. Got all 4 wheels spinning in the wet yesterday after booting it back to 1st up a steep hill.

    How?

more traction accelerating yes, for obvious reasons

More cornering grip? Subaru advertising hype

A tyre has a certain level of grip that it can deliver corner forces, braking and acceleration through.

So AWD could in theory deliver more accelleration if say the cornering forces were at 90% of the tyres total traction at all 4 wheels (hypothetical situation of course) you could utilise the remaining 10% of traction to deliver accelleration to all four wheels before breaking traction with AWD or you could deliver 10% more to two of them with FWD or RWD.

Very simplified way of thinking about it but that's the best I could do.

Google "circle of traction theory" for a better explanation.

Steady state cornering AWD is no better then FWD or RWD.

Out of a corner, yes, it will accelerate better by been able to take more power by having all 4 wheels driven.

Hence my underlining of deliver in my description .

The rest of my example was to illustrate as you said, a tyre has a given level of traction for use in corner, braking and accelleration forces. As you noted, use all that traction with corner force and it won't matter how many wheels you are able to drive.

I'd hazard a guess Steve is talking about accellerating out of a corner but worded it wrong anyway?

Kinda like watching someone else have their way with your girlfriend

Realistically, last time, we would have probably done as many laps as most people did in their own car, just the MR2 went around twice as much My GPS logged around 90 laps, and that wasn't all of them..

Not sure about the full details. I think there was some technical thread about it. It's something to do with the overall force vector applied on each tyre when accelerating and cornering compared with that for the car.
So AWD is better than FWD for sure, can't remember the AWD vs RWD result.

I've had a slushmatic turbo 4wd before. The manual turbo diesel was quicker off the line to about 40km/h.

What, the girlfriend line didn't seal the deal?

To be honest i wouldn't want to be responsible for someone else's car anyway obviously, not to imply that i'm happy to smash brendan's car, but we've known each other a long time, and as hard as i try the MR2 wouldn't be dropping skids at over 100k's and other such crash inducing shenanigans

(if you are reading this brendan, go you stooge)

Accelerating there is no dispute from anyone that AWD will have superior delivery if traction is already being nearly maximised with corner forces.

If you compared two cars....Same vehicle weight distribution etc, same geometry etc, same tyres wheels and everything else except one is AWD and one is FWD they will have exactly the same corner grip.

Acceleration out of the corner would be different in favour of the AWD.

    Spot on.

Cornering grip is the same, acceleration grip is what varies

To make the most of it you need to active torque control like the new awds have, otherwise you will be limited by one end or the other.
