    Default 18rg v's 18rc Gearbox or 5r??

I have a w50 box which was bolted up to an 18rg in my ra28. Will this bolt directly to an 18rc using the bellhousing from the 18rg? Are the throwout forks etc all the same?

On the same token, will it bolt to a 5r engine from a toyota coaster?
I assume they are similar, just checking.

    Cheers.

    Hi,

Yes, you can use the W50 on the 18R-G and the 18R-C engines. It's just a bolt in.

FYI, the original gearbox that was used in the 70s for the 18R-G GT/GTV spec Celicas was the P51. It uses the same gearbox casing as the W50. The P51 is a tougher gearbox with slightly different ratios (not much diff at all) than the W50, but the W50 is plenty strong enough to sit behind an 18R-G.

The W50 was used on the 18R-C engined vehicles of that time.

Not sure about the 5R. Being an R-engine a part of me says yes... but without seeing the engine or knowing anything about it I cannot commit that it would be a quick and simple bolt in.

    Hope this helps.

You can bolt a W50 to a 5R, you just need the correct bellhousing. For an old 3 main bearing 5R, you can use a bellhousing from a 4 speed RT81. For a later model 5R, I'd use the gear from an RN40 Hilux. Pretty sure the bellhousing pattern is different.
