Does the noise go away or get louder on corners? Wheel bearing problem will get louder one way and quiter the other when turning sweepers etc.

Don't think the rear end is adjustable on those but could be wrong.
Could also be dodgy tyres causing a noise. it doesn't have retreads on doea it?

tyres will generally be louder from when you start to move but they can also phase in and out depending on speed..yes the rear is adjustable on those models..best way to tell if its wheel bearing is to turn stereo off, find a road where no one is on and swerve from left to right and see if the noise goes away. if you swerve right the noise goes away its the right hand WB, and same for left.

wheels bearing usually make a grinding type sound, quite like mine have been for the last 12 months, lol. i have spares i got fer nothing, will put em on when i feel its time

and they are bastards, well they are on mine anyway. 570 per side new, i think not.
it seems i cant press them out either, damn toyota profiteering...
though i did manage to pump the passenger side full of grease...shut it up for a while.
Interestingly, it was bone dry. like it was a factory fault or something, i dunno.

    :end of drunken rant:

    Is it a grinding noise?

the noise isnt grinding, it is an annoying hum. it has reached the resonation frequency of my ear drums and really pisses me off now.

MJH and damo101 are right with regard to it disapearing when i turn, right in this case. it also gets louder when suspension undergoes compression and softer when uncompressed after a bump. so i can assume the left bearing is begucked?

no grinding whatsoever and the hum has been there for about a year now. (slack).

No it should be the right hand wheel bearing. Turning right unloads it and so the noise goes away.
Either repack it or probably best to replace both sides and all should be good.

    Check your rear tyres
On the inside edge they will be worn like a 50 cent piece and it will be causing the noise
    It is quite common
