Nope. I just used a metal/stainless blade (as big as you can fit on your saw) and take it easy. I had to go from each side and top and bottom (4 cuts) and cut my head into 5 parts in 1/2 hour.

We should start a dedicated thread on head cutaways once a few have been done.

havent read whole thread but mate has a rb26 professional machined and ported. he had to machine out for larger cams and cnc machine out the quench areas. at the end of the day - come time to bolt the head up, the structure was weakened s omuch that the valves didnt seal once toque was applied to the head.

he overcome this by lapping the valves with a torque plate installed

Time for your smallport to meet the hurty part of a saw.....

My head willjust be getting a clean up and smooth of the combustion chambers, the ports are apparently pretty good, but using the cross sections, I'll be able to work out where best to optimise without affecting structural integrity.
    That's the plan anyway....

Bill, feel free to use the pics on your (awesome) site if you like. That goes for anyone too, just give a small credit (for the good of my e-wang).

I can supply anyone with higher resolution pics too (2048x1536). PM me if you want a copy.

Thanks - I might do that.
It's in need of a good update anyway.

In the first photo (center cut) is that a passage on the exhaust side? The diagonal line from the coolant chamber towards the port????

Yep, it goes to the channels around the combustion chamber. It's about 4mm in diameter.

I wonder how many engines have those blocked by scale?? Probably even less get unblocked during rebuild!

I wonder if there would be a benefit in enlarging that hole to let more coolant flow......

Hi all, i am in the process of doing a rebuild and even after the head came back from the machine shop these little holes were blocked (even though the head was cleaned by whatever the machine shop uses).

It took a bit of work to clean them, but with bits of wire I was able to open up the holes (the last piece of wire I used was from a wire coat hanger that was cut and put in a battery drill)

I would have never have thought to see if these holes were blocked or not, but after coming across this thread i had a closer inspection and found that mine were all blocked.

Top thread (+ for your rep)

p.s. is "Billzilla" the "Bill Sherwood's Stock 4AGE Page" ? if so ...... Hi Bill and your page was very informative and helped in making a choice to go the mighty 4AGTE (which is still in the build stage)

    thanks Gav

    Subscribed for the awesomeness!

Great pics of the cross sectioning. I reckon I might have a go at porting my own (spare) head now that I've seen these. Well, once I get the shitbox running again anyway.
