Default 3sgte conversion in NA SW20

I am considering getting an MR2 but not sure if I should go for the NA or turbo. From what I've seen I can pick up an NA for about 8000 if I'm lucky and turbo would cost me under 15k (I'm in Syd btw).

So basically would it be more cost effective if I got an NA for now and do the conversion later or save up and go straight for the turbo?

get the NA and get a gen III rear cut.

most of the 15K mark turbo MR2's youll find are gen II's anyway.. for a cheaper price you can get the NA, and the rear cut and pull across all the goodies from it including the larger brakes.. the gen III engine (189kw), sod off the AFM, and still have a couple of K left over for exhaust and other things.. youll also have the taillights for a 93+ conversion. do it!

    Thanks for reply.

Just one thing ... How hard is it to find a rear cut of gen3 turbo in Aus?

a lot harder than a gen II thats for sure. and they usually fetch a premium price too.. but theyre worth it. gen II h/cuts should be around the 2500-3000 mark, expect to pay 4000+ for a gen III. a few places have them.. ImportBitz had one that i know of and i think CVAP has a couple too if im not wrong.. Andrew?

Still sounds better value even with the gen3.

Turbo's do usually have some other goodies like the LSD and ABS though.....I reckon they would be worth the extra cash. Gen III's definately pack more punch than a Gen II, speaking to someone today on the MR2 cruise looks like you'd be paying about 18-20K for a good W20 with a Gen 3 3S-GTE.

Senor 2 has done this conversion, maybe you could throw him some questions?

Damn. I don't wanna miss out on those. That just made the decision much harder.

but if you get a gen3 half cut, chances are it will have the lsd box there for you.

not all turbos have abs, the one we sold not long ago didn't

I say just buy a turbo out right big money saver i think. + you get alot more. if you get the gt turbo you get climate ctrl, leather, etc etc. its just a better package i think. in realtion to the gen 3 being better then the gen 2 thats right as a std motor. as the gen 3 make more power and there are alot more bolt on parts avalible for the gen 3 however if you are thinking of modifying the motor exensivly, they are much of a muchness, as the cams would be changed (gen 3 are better) the internals are changed normally the inlet manifold is changed to larger etc so both motors when modified to a large degree are basicly the same.

    good luck

edit: also just a few things gen 2 also had the LSD they were an option, late 93 when all turbos had lsd std.

I didn't know there was so much difference between the turbo one and the NA one apart from just the engine. Could someone list those differences or is there a link?

Turbo cars, usually pack more handling and tranmission goodies.

www.mr2dc.com www.mr2.com and www.mr2club.com.au would be good places to start....

Turbo's and N/A's have optional items, some shared, others not. Some MR2's have directional fog lights, leather trim, hardtop, targa, abs, lsd gen 2,3 & 4 3S engines...list goes on...
